SURBITON, UK – Julian Cash was the third seed with Robert Galloway and the pair claimed the title of the Challenger event. Billy Harris made the semi-final in the singles.
Grass season has kicked off with a joint ATP Challenger & ITF event event. In the Challenger Doubles Julian Cash teamed up with Robert Galloway and were the third seeds. The Brit/American were against Alex Michelsen & Emilio Nava in the first round. The seeds managed to break the serve of the American pair and took the lead. The second set saw Cash & Galloway dominate to move into the next round in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
In the quarter-final the seeds were against Ryan Seggerman & Patrik Trhac. The Americans pushed the Brit/American pair hard. In the first set Seggerman & Trhac stayed toe to toe with the seeds and it looked to be heading to a tiebreak. However, eventually, the seeds broke serve to take the lead. The second set was even harder, as Cash & Galloway were unable to find a way through the Americans and a tiebreak followed. The tiebreak was very tight, but the seeds eventually edged through to move into the next round 7-5, 7-6(12).
The semi-final saw Cash & Galloway against Mark Lajal & Alexei Popyrin. The Spaniard/Australian were unable to take to the court and handed the match to the seeds. The Brit/American were in the final of the first grass court challenger on UK soil, not the way they would have wanted. 0-0 (RET).
In the final Cash & Galloway were against the fourth seeds Nicolas Barrientos & Diego Hidalgo. The Brit/American were made to work hard, but managed to secure a break of serve in the first set to take the lead. Barrientos & Hidalgo tried to mount a fight back in the second set, but the third seeds secured the vital break of serve to claim the title 6-4, 6-4.
Billy Harris was awarded a wildcard to the event. In the first round the Brit was against eighth seed Shang Juncheng. The Chinese found the Brit too good in the first set, as Harris broke early to take the lead. The second set was much closer, as neither player got the vital break of serve and so a tiebreak ensued. In the breaker it was the Brit who edged through to take the match in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(8).
The second round saw the Brit against Mikhail Kukushkin. The Kazakh got off to the much better start, breaking the Brit right at the end to take the first set. However, the second set saw Harris lift his game. Forcing a second set tiebreak, Harris edged through and levelled up the match. The final set saw both players go toe to toe and another tiebreak followed. In this one, Harris eased through and moved into the semi final 5-7, 7-6(5), 7-6(4).
In the semi-final Brit Harris was against South African Lloyd Harris. The South African battled hard and broke Billy Harris in both sets to take the win in straight sets and cap of a very very good week for Brit Harris. The South African went through 6-4 , 6-4.
