The good form continues for Coco Gauff who backed up her run to the final in Madrid with a quarter-final here in Rome. The American’s confidence continues to accelerate which was evident in her win over Emma Raducanu in order to progress to the last eight. Despite her form, Gauff will know the next step is to win a WTA 1000 as this could be her best chance yet to win a Roland Garros title given Iga Swiatek’s recent lacklustre form.

The title credentials of Gauff will be put to the test against Mirra Andreeva in what is a rematch from last week’s match in Madrid. The seventh seed produced an emphatic last two sets to prevail against Clara Tauson in order to progress to the quarter-finals and continue her impressive season. Despite Andreeva’s incredible year so far, the 18 year-old has so far struggled to find a way past Gauff and will now hope she can problem solve he way past the fourth seed in what is an important match for her long term development.

Gauff will look to serve aggressively as the American will once again aim to dictate the pace of the rallies and rush Andreeva’s play. Meanwhile Andreeva will need to get the first strike in as she looks to have time to pick her shot and use variety to catch the American off guard. This will be a slightly more competitive match last week but Gauff is expected to use her confident play to secure a fourth consecutive victory over Andreeva.

Prediction: Gauff in three sets.

Defending champion Alexander Zverev earned a much needed win over Arthur Fils to progress to the quarter-finals in Rome. It hasn’t been a smooth sailing year for the German but should Zverev manage to defend his title then it could give him the platform to achieve better results this year. The question remains as to whether Zverev’s confidence is at a place where he can go deep at some of the biggest events of the year and that will certainly be tested in the next round.

That’s because Zverev will now face in-form Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals. Musetti has been in fine form over the last couple of months and that continued with a dramatic straight sets win over Daniil Medvedev. It’s one thing to break new ground at Masters 1000 level but it’s another thing to produce consistent results at this level. However, that is what Musetti has achieved as he is in the form of his life and will hope he can produce another deep run but this time on home soil as he build momentum towards Roland Garros.

Zverev will aim to be aggressive on return as he will need to take time away from Musetti. Meanwhile the Italian will look to make Zverev move around the court by using the backhand to create angles. This will be a tough test for Zverev and the home crowd mixed with Musetti’s confidence may prove too strong for the German.

Prediction: Musetti in three sets.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka has continued to show why she is the best player in the world right now. There is an argument to say that Sabalenka should be the favourite for Roland Garros later this month and that could well be the case if the top seed can win Rome this week. The 27 year-old will hope she can continue to get stronger as she keeps adding new things to her game which makes her stand out from the rest of the pack.

Next up for Sabalenka is eighth seed Qinwen Zheng who has bounced back well from her opening round exit in Madrid last week. The Olympic gold medallist had a busy 2024 but so far it has been a stable 2025 with more focus on consistency so far. The 22 year-old has maintained her place in the world’s top ten but will now see an opportunity to improve on her level as she will expect big results in Paris later this month.

Sabalenka will aim to be aggressive on serve using the forehand to pin Zheng behind the baseline. Zheng will use variety to mix up the tempo of the rallies as she looks to force errors from the world number one’s game. This should be a good test for Sabalenka but a seventh consecutive victory over Zheng is expected.

Prediction: Sabalenka in straight sets.
