Playing styles and prediction

Carballes Baena has only won two matches since claiming the Marrakech title where he beat Evans in the semi-finals. The Spaniard has an incredible ability to turn consistent defence into aggressive attacking shots as he transitions with ease. Carballes Baena will look to continue to use that in Rome as he looks to become a regular top 50 player in 2023.

Evans will need to consistently serve well in order to neutralise the accurate and consistent returning of Carballes Baena. The Brit will look to be patient from the baseline and come into the net to show his aggression in the right moments. Meanwhile the Spaniard will look to continue to transition defence into attack as he looks to remain consistent from the baseline looking to use a mix of speed and depth to expose the space left by the 20th seed. This will be a tough match for Evans but if he can serve well and construct effective points from the baseline then he will have a good chance of claiming an important victory on the road to Roland Garros.

Prediction: Carballes Baena in three sets.
