Up until this season, Katie Boulter had not been in the main draw of a tour-level clay court tournament, and she faces Paula Badosa who is returning from an injury-stricken 2023.

H2H: Katie Boulter (WR 28) Paula Badosa (WR 130)
Tournament Previous Best Qualification (2018, 2023) QF (2021)
1st Serve Return Points Won % 36.2 35.4
Return Points Won % 43.8 43.0
Break Point Conversion % 41.7 40.7
Break Points Saved % 44.4 63.6
Overall Service Points Won % 58.5 61.4

Although Bouter just edges Badosa in terms of her return game and making good on break point chances, Badosa’s run to the fourth round in Rome bodes well for her return.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Claggy Paris clay may not be the best place to have two big strikers of the ball slugging it out, but both Badosa and Boulter do enjoy a good clobber of the little yellow fluffies. Both play aggressively and Badosa might fancy her chances of nabbing some free points with her serve.

It has been a long haul back for the Spaniard who sat out a lot of 2023 with a stress fracture in her back – an injury that Boulter herself will be familiar with.

Badosa has the edge on being able to move about on the slippery stuff, and Boulter has been edged out of some close matches in Madrid and Rome. At best she can push Badosa to another close one, but the edge must be with the former quarter-finalist.

Prediction: Badosa in three sets.
