A professional and dominant performance from Carlos Alcaraz as he defeated Sebastian Korda in straight sets to reach the second week. Despite the impressive victories, Alcaraz has still shown a vulnerability about him which he will need to work on as the opposition gets tougher with each round. However there is no doubting the fact that on talent and mentality alone, the Spaniard is the favourite for the title in Paris and will hope that he can sustain his fitness and form in order to claim his Roland Garros dream.

Standing in Alcaraz’s way of a third successive Roland Garros quarter-final is Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian has worked his way into form and continued to build confidence from his run to the Masters 1000 in Madrid. Although Auger-Aliassime got a bit of luck throughout the week, the 21st seed has continued to improve his game and has earned his rewards by reaching the second week in Paris. Now Auger-Aliassime will look to fulfil his potential and show why he should be taken seriously when it comes to potential title contenders.

Alcaraz will aim to extend the rallies by using depth to force shorter balls from the Canadian as he will look to create space on the court, using angles and pace. Meanwhile Auger-Aliassime will need to take advantage of the faster conditions and be aggressive on serve while approaching the net in order to finish off the points. This will be a competitive match with both players in confident mood at the moment. However Alcaraz should be able to survive the early aggression from the Canadian and win this match in a close four set battle.

Prediction: Alcaraz in four sets.

Despite a tricky second round match against Katie Volynets, former finalist Marketa Vondrousova has been in dominant form in Paris so far. The Wimbledon champion hasn’t been spoken about in terms of title contenders but the Czech Republican knows how to win a Grand Slam and knows how to play on clay with her tricky style being awkward for many players on this surface. The ninth seed will hope she can continue her solid form as she aims for a place in the last eight.

Standing in Vondrousova’s way is Serb Olga Danilovic, who simply doesn’t know how to lose at this tournament. Having come through qualifying, Danilovic backed up her win over the in-form Danielle Collins by winning a last tiebreak against Donna Vekic, who served for the match twice. Danilovic has shown her fighting qualities and ability to be aggressive as she will look for another upset and continue her extraordinary run at Roland Garros.

Vondrousova will aim to be aggressive and use a mixture of slice and power to dominate from the baseline, therefore rushing Danilovic’s defensive play. Meanwhile the Serb will look to take advantage of any vulnerable second serves as Danilovic will use her backhand to force Vondrousova of position, creating aggressive patterns of play. This will be a close match but Danilovic may not have the emotional or physical energy to cause another upset here.

Prediction: Vondrousova in three sets.

Jannik Sinner’s hip has held up better than expected as he is safely through to the second week at Roland Garros. This week is a big week for the Italian as a successful next seven days could result in him being the new world number one. However that is the least on Sinner’s mind as the current world number two will hope to also win his second Grand Slam title of his career.

First of all Sinner will have to negotiate charismatic Frenchman Corentin Moutet, who has found a new lease of life at Roland Garros. Moutet has always had the potential but never the emotional control to go with it as his temperament can often get the best of him. However back-to-back wins over Nicolas Jarry and Sebastian Ofner has shown that he can control his tennis on the big stages as he now looks to cause a major upset on home territory.

Sinner will dictate play on serve using the forehand to spread the play and he will use the backhand to create patterns of play. Meanwhile Moutet will use the slice to disrupt Sinner’s rhythm on serve as he will look to get the crowd involved in the match. This will be a good match between two players who can play outstanding tennis when fully concentrated. However Sinner’s more consistent concentration will give him the edge in an emotional encounter.

Prediction: Sinner in four sets.
