After a tough patch of form after winning her second consecutive Australian Open title, Aryna Sabalenka has been a play possessed over the clay court swing. The world number two reached back-to-back finals in Madrid and Rome and came inches away from beating Iga Swiatek in Spain. Sabalenka has now cruised through the draw and is a win away from her second consecutive Roland Garros semi-final as she aims to continue her dominant form.
A tough quarter-final opponent stands in Sabalenka’s way as young prodigy Mirra Andreeva awaits in the last eight. The 17 year-old has backed up her run to the fourth round from last year by going one round further in 2024 having beaten Victoria Azarenka on her way to the quarter-finals. Andreeva’s mix of slice, power and depth makes her the real deal already at such a young age and she will have nothing to lose from this round onwards as she looks to add another big win to her collection.
Sabalenka will look to maintain her serving aggression and consistency as she will use the forehand to dictate the tempo of the rallies. Meanwhile Andreeva will aim to use angles on the backhand side to open up the court as she will use the slice to try and make Sabalenka feel uncomfortable from the baseline. This should be a good test for Sabalenka but the world number two should have too much quality in what should be a tight quarter-final match.
Prediction: Sabalenka in three sets.

A second consecutive five set victory for Alexander Zverev as he outlasted former quarter-finalist Holger Rune in an epic contest. The German entered Roland Garros in good form having won the Rome title for a second time but Zverev continues to show that he lacks the efficiency needed to win a Grand Slam as a lack of energy may be a factor in the latter stages. Now Zverev aims to secure a fourth consecutive Roland Garros semi-final and keep himself in the conversation in terms of title contenders.
Next for Zverev is Alex De Minaur who is into his first Roland Garros quarter-final after defeating a wounded Daniil Medvedev in four sets. The Australian has had a sensational season so far having made his top ten debut as well as producing consistently deep runs at tournaments. Despite a poor recent run of form, the Australian has now conquered the clay and will now have the belief that he can reach the last four having already beaten Zverev this season.
Zverev will aim to use depth to force shorter balls from De Minaur as the German will look to grind down De Minaur’s game with his backhand. Meanwhile De Minaur will need to be aggressive on serve as he looks to take advantage of the faster conditions and neutralize Zverev’s return game. This will be a good test for Zverev but as long as the German can keep his stamina levels high then he should have too much for the gritty Australian.
Prediction: Zverev in four sets.

It’s been a professional performance from Elena Rybakina so far at Roland Garros as the Kazakh routinely defeated Elina Svitolina in order to reach the quarter-finals. The world number four is often at her best when she is under the radar and that has proven to be the case despite her fantastic start to the clay court season. Now the former Wimbledon champion is aiming for a first Roland Garros semi-final.
Standing in Rybakina’s way is the in-form Jasmine Paolini, who’s form in doubles has helped her gain confidence in singles. The world number 15 climbed to new heights earlier this year when she claimed the title in Dubai but hasn’t really pushed on in singles since that achievement. However a doubles title alongside Sara Errani in Rome has given Paolini the confidence in her game needed as she now searches for a first Grand Slam semi-final at Roland Garros.
Rybakina will continue to serve efficiently as she will use the forehand to force Paolini in uncomfortable positions, preventing the Italian from approaching the net. Meanwhile Paolini will aim to use her backhand to construct points as she looks to move Rybakina all around the court by using angles. The duo met in Stuttgart where Rybakina won in a tough three set match and it’s expected that there will be a similar result in this match as well.
Prediction: Rybakina in three sets.
