Stefanos Tsitsipas has had to survive stern tests from Lorenzo Musetti and Zdenek Kolar but last year’s finalist is into the last 16 and is gradually playing better with each round. The fourth seed is aiming to claim his first grand slam title and there would be no better way than to do it on his favourite surface in Paris. A favourable draw means that Tsitsipas has one of the best chances of his career to claim the pinnacle of tennis.

However the second week road to the title won’t be any easier than the first week as Holger Rune stands in his way of a place in the quarter-finals. Rune has been building momentum over the course of the clay court swing, winning the Munich title and reaching the semis in Lyon. After an opening round win over Denis Shapovalov, the Dane has built on his belief and confidence and will know that he is capable of testing the other 15 players left in the draw.

This will arguably Tsitsipas’ toughest test of his Roland Garros so far and can’t afford to lack intensity from the early stages of the match. The longer the match goes, the more it will favour Tsitsipas but can the Dane make use of a quick start? Tsitsipas will be the favourite but Rune will do everything to take him to his limits.

Prediction: Tsitsipas in four sets.

After a clay court season full of highs and lows, Andrey Rublev is starting to pick up his form as he approaches the second week of Roland Garros. A four set win over Cristian Garin showed his talent, mental strength and resilience as he reached the last 16. Now Rublev looks to reach the last eight in Paris and show a real statement of intent that he is a contender to go all the way here.

Next for Rublev is Jannik Sinner with the Italian also looking in strong form at Roland Garros so far having only dropped one set all tournament. The world number 12 has the power, personality and defensive skills to win a grand slam but is now looking to translate that potential into actual results. After an easy opening week, Sinner’s resolve will be tested in a tricky second week.

This is a match which will see two players who produce unrelenting power off both sides and will not give up with a fight. Given the rhythm of Rublev’s matches so far, this match should go the distance and the Italian’s energy conservation may give him the edge here as a quarter-final place awaits the winner.

Prediction: Sinner in five sets.

Daria Kasatkina has hit form at the right time as she looks to rebuild her career after a tough last couple of seasons. The Russian reached the semi-finals in Rome and has breezed through the first week after an impressive win over Shelby Rogers in the last round. Now Kasatkina will look to take advantage of a good draw and reach the last eight in Paris for a second time.

Standing in Kasatkina’s way is big-hitting Camila Giorgi who has controlled her power and secured a place in the second week. After losing the opening set, the Italian only lost three games to Aryna Sabalenka as she sent out a major statement. Giorgi’s game seems more complete than ever before and now she looks to break new ground on clay at Roland Garros.

This is a perfect mixture of styles as power takes on variety and slice in this intriguing last 16 contest. Kasatkina has the slight edge in terms of solving the Giorgi problem and extending the rallies as well as putting the Italian into uncomfortable positions. However if Giorgi can deal with that well enough and hit through Kasatkina’s defence then it’s her match to lose.

Prediction: Kasatkina in three sets.
