Hackneyed phrase or not, there is a real sense that we are seeing the future of the WTA – and it appears to be in safe hands. As some of the established old guard have headed home early, and younger favourites have fallen, we have two players who have excelled in the junior ranks, especially at Roland Garros. Amanda Anisimova was the 2016 runner-up and in 2019 Leylah Fernandez went one better and won the girls’ tournament.

We can expect some hard hitting from two players who live to play dominant and aggressive tennis, and both have a sense of belief that they can win big. Fernandez has already show that she has the game to last the two weeks of a Slam, and Anisimova is no slouch, having reached the 2019 Roland Garros semi-final.

It is a tough one to call but Fernandez just has a slight edge – but will be made to work for it.

Prediction: Fernandez in three sets.

Now then here is a conundrum for Toni Nadal. For years he steered his beloved nephew Rafael Nadal to practically own Court Philippe-Chatrier with his record-breaking 13 French Open titles. But all good things came to an end and the coaching relationship between uncle and nephew came to an end.

Nadal senior moved on to pastures new and under his tenure, Felix Auger-Aliassime’s crowd-pleasing but at times inconsistent tennis has paid dividends with the young Canadian being a part of an ATP Cup winning team and going on to claim his first title.

Coach Nadal has stated he won’t be in the stands out of respect for both players.

Auger-Aliassime has no doubt settled into an accomplished player, but Nadal has been his usual bullish self, and while the Canadian could conceivably get a set off him, it will need to be early because if Nadal gets a foothold in the match, it will be tough for Auger-Aliassime to fight back.

Prediction: Nadal in four sets.

Even though Karen Khachanov put out the British No. 1 Cameron Norrie, it was a highly entertaining match which saw the Russian really try and get the crowd behind him and he might have to do that again as he takes on the erstwhile Prince of Clay, Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz has really been taken to French hearts with his gutsy aggressive tennis, and even though he is making a round of 16. Khachanov is a former quarter-finalist at the French Open, but Alcaraz’s dogged determination should see him through, but it won’t be easy.

Prediction: Alcaraz in four sets.
