Iga Swiatek survived a massive scare to reach the last eight at Roland Garros at the hands of 19 year-old star Qinwen Zheng. However even the Pole’s toughest test involved her only losing two games in the final two sets as she still remains the indisputable favourite to claim her second Roland Garros title. Can Swiatek deal with the pressure and expectation and claim a second grand slam title?

Standing in Swiatek’s way in the quarter-finals is the highest ranked player left to challenger the Pole and that’s Jessica Pegula. The American has remained consistent throughout this clay court season and has built on her performance in Madrid where she reached the final. Pegula will now look to take her stubborn defence and heavy ball-striking to the latter stages of Roland Garros as she aims for a maiden Roland Garros semi-final.

This match favours Swiatek massively especially on the clay with the Pole’s slices, variety and power too good for the American’s solidity. Pegula will need to put Swiatek under pressure early if she wants to have any chance but the Pole should make the last four in Paris in comfortable fashion.

Prediction: Swiatek in straight sets.

Andrey Rublev is the highest ranked player left from the bottom half of the draw and is looking to take advantage of a huge opportunity to reach his first grand slam final. The Russian benefited from a Jannik Sinner retirement in the last round and will now hope that his form picks up as he reaches the crucial stage of the tournament.

Next for Rublev is former US Open champion Marin Cilic with the Croatian playing some incredible tennis over the last couple of weeks and blitzed Daniil Medvedev in the last round to reach the quarter-finals. Cilic’s movement mixed with effective power means that when he is on form, there are very few players who can stop him. Now Cilic will hope that he can take advantage of the draw and reach his second grand slam final.

This match could depend on what form and mood Cilic is in with Rublev’s defensive skills not been up to scratch recently. This should be an entertaining clash with pressure and nerves expected to be a factor. Given his form over the clay court season, Rublev still has to enter this match as slight favourite.

Prediction: Rublev in five sets.

Daria Kasatkina completely destroyed Camila Giorgi in her last match and has continued to display the kind of talent that many people predicted would be at the top of the women’s game by now. Kasatkina’s creative flair has caused many players problems and now the Russian stands one win away from her first grand slam semi-final. Now for Kasatkina it’s about dealing with the pressure and holding her nerve in the most important moments.

Next for Kasatkina is Veronika Kudermetova who is having a great season and backed that up with victory over Madison Keys in the last round. Kudermetova’s flawless power from the back of the court and effective point construction has seen her achieve consistent results in 2022 and now looks to break new ground at grand slam level.

Kasatkina’s confidence and counter-attacking ability is at an all-time high and it’s expected that this surface suits her game more than Kudermetova’s in this type of match-up. It will be an entertaining affair and expect there to be a lot of nerves in the match with so much on the line on such a big stage.

Prediction: Kasatkina in three sets.

Casper Ruud is into his first grand slam quarter-final and toughing out two tight wins over Lorenzo Sonego and Hubert Hurkacz is no easy task but the Norwegian has shown great mental qualities to make it into the last eight. Now on his favourite surface, Ruud is looking to use his momentum and take advantage of a favourable draw and reach his maiden grand slam final.

Next for Ruud is 19 year-old sensation Holger Rune who caused the shock of the men’s tournament so far by knocking out last year’s finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets. The Dane has used his title run in Munich to good advantage and is now looking to use Roland Garros as a platform to bigger successes just like Carlos Alcaraz has.

This will be a classic clay-court match with both players high on confidence and playing free-flowing tennis. The form book goes with Rune while experience favours Ruud, either way this should be a high-stakes and long tactical battle with a place in the semi-finals awaiting the winner.

Prediction: Rune in four sets.
