Aryna Sabalenka has had a very turbulent 2022 season and the Belarusian has continued that turbulent form into Roland Garros as she has made the last 32 by the skin of her teeth. However Sabalenka’s grit and mental fortitude cannot be questioned and those qualities mixed with experience will make her tough to beat as she looks to seal an unlikely place into the last 16.

Next up for Sabalenka is fellow big-hitter Camila Giorgi who scored a very impressive win in the last round over Yulia Putintseva. The Italian has won back-to-back matches for the first time at a WTA event since the Australian Open and is a player who loves the big occasion as she looks to make the second week of her weakest grand slam on paper. The question is can Giorgi keep her cool and score another big win?

This is a match of fiery tempers, big hitting and big serving as both players like to dictate the tempo of rallies. Although Giorgi is the type of player that can capitalise on Sabalenka’s mishaps, the Belarusian will remain favourite for the second week and her mental grit should get her through this match.

Prediction: Sabalenka in three sets.

After a poor start to the season, Elena Rybakina has hit consistent form in recent months and continues to win back-to-back matches at tournaments. The Kazakh has proved over the last couple of years that she has all the talent to beat anyone on the tour. Furthermore, Rybakina has the composure to match and loves to do well at Roland Garros as she aims for another deep run in Paris this year.

Next for Rybakina is former semi-finalist Madison Keys who has a much improved season in 2022. The American reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open and won a title in Adelaide. However after a good tournament at Indian Wells, the American headed into Roland Garros with one win from four tournaments but seems to have steadied the ship in Paris. Can Keys control her power and reach the last 16?

This is a match between two big-hitters who are comfortable on the red dirt and will enjoy the tactical battle of how to use their power. Rybakina has the slight edge heading into this match given her confidence heading into Roland Garros but this match will be decided by the thinnest of margins.

Prediction: Rybakina in three sets.

Daniil Medvedev couldn’t have asked for a better Roland Garros so far with two straight set wins seeing him into the third round. This is only the Russian’s second tournament back since Hernia surgery and he has exceeded his own expectations as he looks to get ranking points on the board ahead of his Wimbledon absence. After breaking new ground last year in Paris, Medvedev has a place in the semi-finals in his sights.

However Miomir Kecmanovic will look to derail that progress with the Serbian having a breakthrough season this year. After reaching back-to-back quarter-finals in Indian Wells and Miami, the Serb has continued that momentum into the clay court swing as he looks to finally make his breakthrough at a grand slam. Can he continue his great season by making the second week in Paris.

Kecmanovic should give Medvedev a proper test especially in terms of endurance with this being the Russian’s first proper test since hernia surgery. However in a best of five set format, Medvedev should still prevail with his defence and movement being too good for the power of Kecmanovic.

Prediction: Medvedev in four sets.
