Victoria Azarenka is no stranger to being in grand slam contention although this year, injuries have disrupted not only her clay court season but her 2021 in general. However after reaching the US Open final last summer, Azarenka’s game has a renewed confidence and will no doubt be looking for another deep grand slam run.

As for her opponent, Clara Tauson, the 18 year-old is one of many young talents who are rising through the WTA tour. The Dane recently won her first WTA title in Lyon and has a strong powerful game to match her confident. Although clay isn’t her favourite surface, Tauson will no doubt be fearless of claiming the biggest win of her career.

Azarenka’s style will match up well with Tauson and if her back is fully healed then her counter-attacking abilities will be too much for the young Dane. But if Tauson can settle the early nerves then we could be in for an afternoon treat.

Prediction: Azarenka in three sets.

Daniil Medvedev created his own history in his first round as he won his first ever match at Roland Garros. For the guy that hates clay that is pretty good going and check this out, he actually likes conditions and the balls at Roland Garros! If that is the case then he could have a good chance of taking advantage of a depleted half of the draw.

As for Tommy Paul, the American has found the transition to the main tour a struggle to say the least. Ranked 52, the 24 year-old has a big game with good athleticism and has given the likes of Dominic Thiem a tough time at Roland Garros in the past. Being comfortable in the surface and a controlled game has lead many to believe he will make his big breakthrough sooner rather than later.

Paul should make a good account of himself here but his lack of form and Medvedev’s superior defensive traits should see the Russian into the third round under the Roland Garros lights.

Prediction: Medvedev in four sets.

Madison Keys has had a rough start to the year after testing positive for COVID-19 therefore missing out on the Australian Open. Since then the American has only won three matches this season with two of those wins coming against players outside the top 100. However her past experience on clay as a former semi-finalist will hope to revive her season at Roland Garros.

Tomorrow Keys comes up against someone that could be seen as a younger version of herself in Leylah Fernandez. The Canadian has a big game, a bubbly personality and a confident attitude on a surface that she is very comfortable. Although the Canadian has not won back to back matches on this surface this season, Fernandez will believe her opportunity to have a big win is now.

Even though Keys’ game is more matured, the American lacks confidence right now and now could be the time for Fernandez to make major waves at a grand slam.

Prediction: Fernandez in three sets.
