Heather Watson v Fiona Ferro | H2H: Watson leads 2-0

With a withdrawal from WTA Strasbourg in the run up to Roland Garros, Heather Watson will hope to regain some of the momentum she had during the domestic restart in the Battle of the Brits, where Watson went unbeaten in singles.

It has been a different situation back on the tour proper, as she has yet to claim a tour win since winning Acapulco at the beginning of March.

Despite perhaps having a forehand that lends itself to clay court tennis, and having put in a lot of hard yards during lockdown in working on her serve and her on-court demeanour, Fiona Ferro has yet to make it out of the second round of the tournament (same as Watson).

She did, however, have a much stronger start out of the blocks after playing a few FFT restart tournaments, she went on to stun Anett Kontaveit in the final of Palermo. She was not on the abbreviated US Open swing, so will have had plenty of time to acclimate to the claggy conditions on clay in autumn.

Watson will need to call on her abilities to defend as well as the more aggressive game she has developed over the years. It will require a bit of oomph to hit through the ball if the conditions stay as they are, and the weather certainly has no plans to behave itself in the first week.

Watson has the experience to come through tough fights and certainly against Ferro she has had to come through a couple of tight tie-breaks.

Prediction: Watson in three sets.

Watson & Ferro are scheduled second on Court 14, not before 1pm (12pm BST).
