Denis Shapovalov [9] v Gilles Simon | H2H: Shapovalov leads 1-0
Under the guidance of Mikhail Youzhny, Denis Shapovalov has cracked the Top 10 for the first time. The ninth seed, coming off the semi-finals of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, showed he can be effective and consistent on clay. The lefty aims to improve his 1-2 record at Roland Garros as he plays French veteran Gilles Simon.
The former top-10 won a single match on this surface in 2020, in the opening qualifying round in Hamburg. Heavy conditions and heavy balls will create further problem to the Canadian. But if he wants to fulfil his potential he has to win these kind of matches too.
Prediction: Shapovalov in straight sets
Jaume Munar v Stefanos Tsitsipas [5] | H2H: Tsitsipas leads 1-0
Stefanos Tsitsipas will take on Jaume Munar in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday. His clay-court season resembles a rollercoaster. He lost his first match at in Rome, but then reached the final at Hamburg.
In his first match at 2020 Roland Garros, he plays the 2014 junior finalist Munar. The Spaniard has won six Challenger titles on clay. He peaked at No. 52 in the rankings last year but is now slipped just outside the top 100. The Greek has won their lone previous meeting at the 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals event in Italy.
He’s expected to exploit his superior tennis against the steady opponent who never moved past the second round at Grand Slam level. Munar could have a chance only if the Greek is not focused enough.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in four sets
Jennifer Brady [21] v Clara Tauson | First Meeting
Jennifer Brady won her maiden WTA title last August in Lexington. She rebuilt her game thanks to German coach Michael Geserer. The No.21 seed hits powerfully and purposefully from the baseline off both sides. Her heavy grounstrokes can be particularly productive this year in Paris.
She will open her campaign against 2019 Australian open junior champion Clara Tauson. The Dane teenager had a stellar junior career but she seemed eager to remain humble and work to improve day in and day out. Tauson is now 12-2 since August, which includes a title on clay in Portugal and maiden WTA main draw wins in Prague.
She learned from tough or close losses to remain consistent during the key points in a match, to focus on what she can control in a match. Being clearly the underdog, Tauson can play freely and draw a lot of positive from her Roland Garros debut.
Prediction: Brady in three sets.
Play starts on Day Three at 11am (10am BST).
