Kyle Edmund v Ugo Humbert | First Meeting
It has been a bit of a break for British No. 1 Kyle Edmund, having taken his time to get over the injury that hampered the start of his year. Winning the Indian Wells Challenger event as a pre-cursor to the bigger event did a lot to restore some confidence in Edmund’s game, as he reached the third round of both Indian Wells and Miami.
Back on the surface that lends itself well to Edmund’s game, there will be high hopes he can have a deep run here, but it is a class field this year, boasting Alexander Zverev as the top seed this year.
Meanwhile back to business – and first up for Edmund is France’s Ugo Humbert. He has had a fair bit of success this year I the ATP Challenger tour, reaching the semi-final in Quimper and winning the Cherbourg Challenger title in February before a very spirited run to the Marseille semi-final. Back to the main tour, Indian Wells and Miami saw first round exits.
Humbert likes a more offensive game who will come in and volley, so Edmund will want his own trademark serve and forehand combination to be firing particularly well. His game adapts well to clay, and there are high hopes that he can start his season well here.
Experience also should be on his side, and this should be a solid win to start his campaign off, in a field that ought to rightly give him a great test, despite being an ATP Tour 250.
Prediction: Edmund in straight sets.
