Coco Gauff had an incredible first experience as an Olympian as the American was flag bearer alongside Lebron James at the opening ceremony. A moment that Gauff won’t forget in a hurry even if she was drenched by the Parisian weather on a boat as the world number two got to lead her country alongside one of her idols. Now Gauff will aim to capitalize on that experience and continue her good form on clay as she will have high hopes of leaving Paris with a medal given her previous record at Roland Garros.

A tough first round match awaits in the form of Australian Ajla Tomljanovic who seems to be back in form after struggling with injuries. Tomljanovic’s return to tennis at the start of the year didn’t last long as injuries and lack of fitness have once again halted her progress this season. However a run to the final in Birmingham seems to have rejuvenated for the Australian and now looks to thrive where she thrives the most and that’s in a team environment, representing her country.

Gauff will aim to be aggressive and proactive as she will use the serve to dictate play as well as maintaining pressure on return by using the forehand. Meanwhile Tomljanovic will use the backhand to create depth and pin Gauff behind the baseline as she aims to maintain a consistently high level on return. This will be a good early test as the American is expected to overcome early nerves in order to progress to the second round.

Prediction: Gauff in straight sets.

It’s been an incredible year for Alex De Minaur as the Australian has beaten the world’s best starts, reached the world’s top ten and now is achieving his Olympic dream. That dream almost ended after a bad injury at Wimbledon saw him face a race against time in order to be fit for the Olympics. However, De Minaur is in Paris and ready to replicate his run to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last month and maybe even go further as he targets an Olympic medal.

A brutal opening round match awaits De Minaur in the form of powerful German Jan-Lennard Struff. Struff has had some incredible results this season which includes winning the title on home turf in Munich as well as consistent runs to the quarter-final and semi-final while the German also nearly defeated Jannik Sinner in Halle. Now competing at his third Olympic Games, Struff will aim to use his confidence to dash De Minaur’s Olympic hopes before they’ve properly begun.

De Minaur will hope to implement aggressive and smart returning in order to force unforced errors from the powerful German. Meanwhile, Struff will stick to his aggressive tactics as he aims to produce deep and effective play from the baseline as he will pin De Minaur behind the baseline. This will be a tight match with lots of twists and turns which will prove if De Minaur is fully fit or whether playing the Olympics was a risk too far.

Prediction: Struff in three sets.

It’s been an incredible last few weeks for Barbora Krejcikova who is still soaking in her Wimbledon glory. The Czech Republican’s triumph at Wimbledon was her second Grand Slam title in singles and now gets to continue her form at the Olympics. Krejcikova’s first Grand Slam title was at Roland Garros and now the ninth seed will hope those memories can power her way into medal contention in Paris.

Standing in Krejcikova’s way in the opening round is Sara Sorribes Tormo who has proven to be more than competent on clay. The Spaniard has notched up some good wins this season but her recent form leaves a lot left to be desired having only won one match in her last seven. Now Sorribes Tormo will hope the Olympic environment forces her to raise her level of play as she looks to cause a big upset in the opening round.

Krejcikova will look to use her variety and powerful forehand to pin Sorribes Tormo behind the baseline. Meanwhile Sorribes Tormo will extend the rallies and mix up the different paces of ball in order to force unforced errors from the Wimbledon champion. This will be a good early test for Krejcikova but the ninth seed should prevail comfortably.

Prediction: Krejcikova in straight sets.
