The main focus at this year’s Nitto ATP Finals will be on home favourite and world number one Jannik Sinner. The Italian will end the season as the world number one and now aims to start his bid for ATP Finals glory on home turf when he takes on debutant Alex De Minaur in his opening round robin match.

It has been an incredible season for Sinner who has won both the Australian Open and US Open titles as well as proving his consistency by winning many titles. Furthermore Sinner has been a dominant force on all surfaces, improving all aspects of his game that were once seen as weaknesses. However with the positive doping test looming over his head, controversy has hit Sinner and the Italian will be hoping that cloud is gone soon ahead of a big 2025.

After losing to Novak Djokovic in the final last year, Sinner would love nothing more than to go one step further this year and the Italian will start that bid in Turin against debutant De Minaur. It’s because of Djokovic’s withdrawal that the Australian is in the competition but that should take nothing away from a sensational year for De Minaur who made his top ten debut at the start of the year. Since then De Minaur has gone from strength to strength, breaking new ground on weaker surfaces as well as being consistent at Grand Slam events with the Australian aiming to finish off his breakthrough year in convincing fashion in Turin.

Sinner will aim to dictate play on the serve and forehand while De Minaur will rely on his serve and footwork around the baseline to extend the rallies. This will be a decent opening test for Sinner but the Italian does everything De Minaur does but ten times better, so this should be a comfortable win for the top seed.

Prediction: Sinner in straight sets.

Before Sinner’s match, the Nitto ATP Finals will start with former champion Daniil Medvedev as he takes on US Open finalist Taylor Fritz on day one in Turin.

It’s been a decent season for Medvedev as the fourth seed recovered well after his traumatic five set defeat to Sinner in the Australian Open final. There have been plenty of positives for Medvedev including consistent semi-final performances but nothing to strengthen his position as Grand Slam contender. Medvedev will hope that he can edge nearer towards Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz next year as he would like to win a second Grand Slam title.

Medvedev now plays a player who was also close to winning a Grand Slam this season in the form of Fritz. The American reached his first Grand Slam final on home soil at the US Open before being thrashed by Sinner rather convincingly. It has been a consistently good year for Fritz who has continued to improve his serve and establish himself as a top ten player. Although Fritz will know he can consistently make big finals, the American will be proud of his year and will believe that he is closer to tennis’ elite than he ever has been before.

This match will see Medvedev looking to pin Fritz behind the baseline with depth and power especially on the forehand. While Fritz will use the fast conditions to his advantage as he looks to dictate play on the first serve and will use angles to get Medvedev out of position on the court. Conditions suggest Fritz will win this match but it wouldn’t be surprising if Medvedev’s experience proved pivotal here.

Prediction: Fritz in three sets.
