Rafael Nadal [1] v Daniil Medvedev [4] | Nadal leads H2H 2-0

Despite being stunned in his opening match, the fact that Rafael Nadal is feeling fit enough to go again at the Nitto ATP Finals is a worrying sign for Daniil Medvedev that this US Open rematch might yet go the way of the Spaniard.

Medvedev played a decent aggressive game against Stefanos Tsitsipas in his opener, but the Greek played a compact game, coming in at the right moments and got his tactics right. Medvedev will have to work hard on pummelling with his forehand which can be hard to read and will have to be prepared to be dragged around the court by Nadal.

The Spaniard might have taken some comfort in seeing just how far behind the line Medvedev was standing, which plays nicely into his own style of play, pinning his prey to the back of the court. You would also have to give an edge to Nadal, recovering abdominal or not, with his court coverage and fleetness of foot.

However, after being schooled in the Montreal Masters as part of his outstanding summer of finals, Medvedev stunned many by coming back from two sets down to take Nadal the distance, and while Nadal presumably is motivated by both capturing this title that has eluded him his entire career, as well as capturing the season-ending No. 1 spot, he will have to work for a win.

Prediction: Nadal in three sets.

Having both overturned 0-5 head to heads in their opening matches, Tsitsipas will hope to fall back on his winning streak over the defending champion Alexander Zverev to stake his claim as one of the two players most likely to occupy a semi-final berth.

This game plan against Medvedev showed just what a dangerous player he can be. He has all the crowd-pleasing, flashy shots but for once was able to contain them within the court. Zverev played a very aggressive game against Nadal and stopped him from being able to dictate the play, but Tsitsipas will be looking to make him move.

The Greek was most effective coming in at the right times to exploit Medvedev’s movement but Zverev is no slouch at the net either, and the German will certainly be fired up to snap this three-match losing streak against Tsitsipas.

Prediction: Zverev in three sets.

Nadal & Medvedev are scheduled not before 2pm, Zverev & Tsitsipas not before 8pm.
