Johanna Konta [14] def., Dayana Yastremska [Q] 6-2 6-4

British No. 1 Johanna Konta was in impressive form in her opener, and looked in commanding form against Dayana Yastremska, who was a replacement for Donna Vekic. In fact, it may have been a saving grace for the Brit, who has yet to make it past the second round in Birmingham.

Konta broke decisively twice in succession to take the first set, but had her work cut out in a tighter second set, with Yastremska deflecting five break points in a couple of games before Konta finally got her just rewards with a late break, before serving out for the match.

The Ukrainian had no chances at all on Konta’s serve and was far too error-strewn to make an impact on the Brit’s game.

Johanna Konta [14] v Maria Sakkari | Konta leads H2H 2-1

Maria Sakkari also coasted into the second round without having to face a break point on her serve, but grass might not be the Greek’s favourite surface, going 0-3 on the green stuff last year.

This will be their second encounter on grass and Konta comes in as the favourite for sure, even though Sakkari actually has more time on grass, although her wins came in Nottingham where many of the matches had to be completed indoors.

While Sakkari has improved on her performances last year, grass is still a better surface for Konta’s aggressive game and the surface here really does tend to favour the more aggressive players.

However, expect this to be a tougher encounter for Konta.

Prediction: Konta in three sets.
