Playing Styles and Prediction
A fifth consecutive ATP final of 2023 beckons for Medvedev in Miami after another impressive week of tennis. Medvedev continues to reach an insane level of consistency and now looks to prove he is the player to beat ahead of the clay court season.
After his semi-final win, Medvedev said that belief has been the key to his recent run as he chases a first Miami Open title.
“I think I made six finals [in a row] in 2019, so I have some margin,” Medvedev told the ATP website.
“It is a pity it is clay season after, but I am going to try. I am really happy with my results so far but it is not over. Final on Sunday and I have to be at my best to try to win it. I have to believe in myself. I know I am capable of winning big titles. I know I can play well and beat anybody.
“At one moment someone is going to put the water on the fire. It might be Sinner today, it might be me on Sunday, it might be someone else next tournament. You have to believe in yourself. You have to try your best. I am going to enjoy their match and be prepared for the winner.”
In the final Medvedev will face Sinner who defeated a world number one for the first time in his career after an epic win over Alcaraz. Sinner’s red-hot start to the season has been rewarded with a second Miami Open final as he aims to make his big breakthrough on the tour.
After reaching the final, Sinner admitted it meant a lot to reach the final and believes he can win the title.
“It means a lot. We both played a very, very high level of tennis again. I just tried my best,” Sinner told the ATP website.
“In the third set I saw him struggle a little bit for a couple of games so I tried to push there… We both tried to play very aggressive tennis and today it went my way so I’m very happy. I feel good on this court. I have very good memories and hopefully I can show some good tennis.”
Medvedev will look to frustrate Sinner by using consistent depth and angles to neutralise the power of Sinner. Meanwhile Sinner will look to use his athleticism to counter-attack Medvedev’s accuracy as he looks to get the first strike in with his serve and forehand.
These conditions suit Sinner well but this match-up does not as Medvedev’s confidence from the baseline will translate into a fourth title of the season.
Prediction: Medvedev in three sets.
