Playing styles and prediction

Progress for Thiem has been very minimal this season but the Austrian is starting to find his feet on the clay having secured five victories from three tournaments. Thiem will look to improve his fitness and form over the next few weeks ahead of Roland Garros as he searches for a continued and consistent rise up the rankings.

Edmund will look to take use his power on serve and through his forehand to dominate the baseline exchanges and test Thiem’s defensive skills. Meanwhile the Austrian will look to use a combination of power as well as crafty drop-shots to keep Edmund guessing. This is a match between two players who need wins and who will benefit from the altitude in Madrid. However Thiem’s recent confidence should see him win this match in a tight three set contest.

Prediction: Thiem in three sets.
