A confidence-boosting win for Ons Jabeur over Simona Halep means that the Tunisian is the favourite for her maiden WTA1000 title in Madrid. Jabeur’s tricky tennis has topped the most in-form players this week and will now look to turn consistency into trophies as she prepares for a deep run at Roland Garros. Can Jabeur take advantage of her opportunity on the fast Madrid clay courts?
A big challenge awaits Jabeur in the semi-finals as she takes on Ekaterina Alexandrova who defeated in-form Amanda Anisimova in the last eight. The Russian has gone under the radar with her unique style of aggression but now looks to make a name for herself on her favourite surface. Taking advantage of a favourable draw isn’t easy but the world number 45 has made it look easy and will look to translate that form into the biggest title of her career.
Jabeur has often struggled with this match-up in the past and the Tunisian will need to be on the front-foot in the early goings to settle any nerves. Alexandrova will have nothing to lose and will play with freedom but Jabeur’s confidence as well as her aggressive tennis this week should be too much for the Russian.
Prediction: Jabeur in three sets.
Jessica Pegula [12] v Jil Teichmann H2H & Match Fundamentals

Jessica Pegula has earned her right to be in the top 20 with some consistent results and a guarantee that she will cause problems to any top player. Now Pegula looks to make the next step and has now proven herself on clay with some top wins over the likes of Bianca Andreescu and Sara Sorribes Tormo. A title in Madrid would surely put her on the brink of a top eight to ten seeding at Roland Garros and that would be a great confidence booster to have ahead of the second grand slam of the season.
Next for Pegula is Jil Teichmann who has proven herself on clay courts in the past. The Swiss star has already knocked out Petra Kvitova, Leylah Fernandez and Elena Rybakina this week all without dropping a set. Now Teichmann looks to bring her silky clay-court skills and grab a major opportunity to surge up the rankings and send a message to the WTA tour that she shouldn’t be underestimated.
Pegula will look to dictate the points from the baseline while Teichmann will look to use her variety and defensive qualities to force unforced errors. Teichmann’s clay court experience sees her as slight favourite for what should be an entertaining semi-final clash.
Prediction: Teichmann in three sets.
