MADRID, SPAIN – Jack Draper ousted Lorenzo Musetti to reach his first Madrid final and will now face Casper Ruud for the title.

Jack Draper is into his second Masters 1000 final of his career after a straight sets win over Lorenzo Musetti. It was an attacking start from both players with break point opportunities being created but it was Draper who showed more efficiency as he broke for a 2-0 lead. There was an immediate response from Musetti as his recent confidence was there to see with the Italian producing some accurate backhands to break back.
However, Draper wasn’t fazed by the change in momentum as the British number one restored his break advantage in the following game in a long return game. This time Draper produced some proactive and attacking serving to consolidate the break, securing a 4-1 lead.
Eventually both players did settle on serve as some clever tennis was being produced although it was Draper that was more consistent at exposing his opponent’s weaknesses. The Italian avoided being broken again with some bold play in pressure moments, saving break point to hold serve in the eighth game. However, Draper remained composed as some powerful forehands secured the hold of serve as he claimed the opening set in 50 minutes.
In the second set both players had more of an identity to their play with Musetti increasing the intensity. The Italian did well to save break point in the third game before applying the pressure in the eighth game. There was some good tactical play from Draper in crucial moments as he needed to remain concentrated in the important moments. The British number one did exactly that with the second set being decided in a tiebreak.
The tiebreak would be decided by fine margins and Draper stepped up his level of play when it mattered most. The only point that went against the serve was when Draper secured a 3-2 lead and never really showed any signs of that lead being under threat. Another big serve secured the match for Draper as he booked his place into a second Masters 1000 final.

Playing Styles and Prediction
After failing to defend his Barcelona title, Ruud has bounced back well as he will now return to the world’s top ten. However the Norwegian will now aim to overcome a rib injury in his bid to finally become a Masters 1000 champion as he continues to build momentum towards Roland Garros.
Draper looks to be aggressive on serve, using the forehand to dictate play from the baseline. Meanwhile Ruud will use the backhand to create angles as he will make Draper move and hope for the Brit to produce unforced errors. Draper enters this match as favourite given his conditioning and form but this could be another classic final with both players looking for a first Madrid title.
Prediction: Draper in three sets.
