Coco Gauff is yet to drop a set so far in Madrid after an impressive win over Dayana Yastremska secured her spot in the last 16. The American is a former Roland Garros finalist and is determined to prove that she can’t just achieve Grand Slam success on hard courts. Now the world number three will aim to take advantage of the fast conditions in the Spanish capital as Gauff searches for more momentum in her bid to challenge Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina at Roland Garros next months.

A tricky challenge awaits Gauff in the fourth round as the 20 year-old takes on compatriot Madison Keys. The world number 20 isn’t associated with clay court success but has reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros before. The slower clay court conditions allows Keys time on the ball to pick her spots and find her range which is a luxury she isn’t afforded on hard or grass courts. Now Keys will aim to continue her fine form as she aims for a spot in the quarter-finals.

As well as producing big and consistent serving, Gauff will use depth to force Keys behind the baseline as she aims to rush Keys’ game. Meanwhile Keys will aim for quick points by using the forehand in order to force Gauff into wide positions allowing Keys to hit efficient winners. This should be a good match between two confident players but Gauff’s overall variety gives her a slight edge here.

Prediction: Gauff in three sets.

Last year Daniil Medvedev learned to love the clay as he achieved an improved display to prove that he can go deep at big tournaments. However comfortability is not something that comes naturally to Medvedev on clay as the world number three had to dig deep to grind a win against Matteo Arnaldi. It will be a long clay court season for Medvedev if he continues to rest on his laurels and now Medvedev will aim for a more aggressive performance as he aims for a place in the last 16 in Madrid.

A big obstacle awaits Medvedev in the third round as he takes on Sebastian Korda in a rematch from their clash in Indian Wells. The American hasn’t had the best form recently but the American’s athletic game has proven to be successful on clay before he aims to gain confidence over the next month. Now Korda will look to haunt Medvedev once again after falling short to the third seed in California.

Medvedev will aim to be consistent on return as he looks to find angles and force errors from Korda’s forehand. Meanwhile Korda will aim to be aggressive on serve and find his range on the backhand as he looks to force Medvedev back behind the baseline and attempt drop shot winners. This will be another long and gruelling contest with Korda’s suitability on clay giving him a slight advantage in this match.

Prediction: Korda in three sets.

It’s been a nightmare last nine months for Ons Jabeur who has suffered with physical and mental health since losing the Wimbledon final. However Jabeur has revived her form in her last two matches showing resilience and tactical quality as she has won back-to-back matches for the first time since October. Now Jabeur looks to maintain some consistency as she will hope for a resurgence at Grand Slam events over the next few months.

A tough fourth round clash awaits Jabeur in the form of former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian has had an incredible start to the season and is once again hoping to prove herself as a Grand Slam contender. A mixture of pace and tactical variety has seen Ostapenko become one of the more in-form players on the tour and now Ostapenko aims to continue the momentum into Roland Garros.

Jabeur will aim to be aggressive on the forehand while using the backhand slice to throw Ostapenko off her game. Meanwhile the Latvian will use angles to force Jabeur out of position allowing Ostapenko to hit efficient winners. This should be an entertaining contest between two contrasting styles but Ostapenko should have too much confidence for the Tunisian.

Prediction: Ostapenko in straight sets.
