SUNDERLAND, UK – Harry Wendelken entered the ITF event and was unseeded. The Brit claimed the singles title, whilst Arthur Fery claimed the doubles.
Harry Wendelken entered the ITF event and was unseeded. In the first round the Brit was against the eighth seed Lucas Catarina. The Monégasque took the advantage in the first set, breaking the serve of Wendelken to take the lead. However, the Brit re-grouped and totally dominated the second set as Catarina struggled to hold serve. The final set was close, but it was Wendelken that secured the vital break of serve to take the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The second round saw Wendelken against fellow Brit wildcard Ewan Moore. The first set saw Wendelken dominate, as Moore was unable to hold serve. The second set was much closer as Moore started to find his game. However, no matter what the wildcard tried, Wendelken was up to it, and eventually moved into the next round in straight sets 6-0, 6-3.
In the quarter-final Wendelken was against another Brit wildcard in Ben Jones. In a surprising turn of events, Jones got the jump on the higher ranked Brit. Just as it looked to be heading into a tiebreak, Jones secured a break of serve against Wendelken and took the lead. The next two sets were very to and fro, but neither player could make a breakthrough. Both sets went to tiebreaks with Wendelken edging the first and dominating the second to move into the next round 5-7, 7-6(5), 7-6(1).
The semi-final saw the Brit against third seed Goncalo Oliveira. The Portuguese stayed close to Wendelken in the first set, but eventually the Brit secured the break of serve to take the lead. The second set followed the same pattern, with the Brit fighting to secure the vital break of serve and move into the final 6-4, 6-4.
The final was a Battle of the Brits, as Wendelken was against the winner of the ITF event at Sheffield last week Arthur Fery. Wendelken and Fery fittingly fought hard in both sets. However, it was Wendelken that secured the vital break of serve in both sets. As a result, Wendelken claimed the ITF singles title in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Doubles Event
Arthur Fery teamed up with Mili Poljičak and were the third seeds. In the first round Fery & Poljičak were against Billy Blaydes & Patrick Brady. The unseeded pair surprised the seeds and broke serve in the first set taking the lead. However, the seeds re-grouped in the second set and broke serve of Blaydes & Brady to level up the match. In the ensuing tiebreak the seeds edged through to the next round 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
The quarter-final saw the Brit/Croat against Tom Hands & Michael Shaw. The Brits stayed close to the seeds, before Fery & Poljičak secured the break of serve to take the lead. The second set saw the seeds dominate, as Hands & Shaw struggled to hold serve. The third seeds moved into the next round 6-4, 6-1.
In the semi-final the Brit/Croat were against the top seeds Filip Bergevi & Petros Tsitsipas. The Swede/Greek pair were dominated by Fery & Poljičak in both sets. No matter what the top seeds try the Brit/Croat were up to the challenge. In the end it was the third seeds that progressed to the final 6-1, 6-2.
The final saw the third seeds against unseeded Brits Giles Hussey & Johannus Monday. The third seeds broke serve early in the first set to take the lead. The second set was a little closer, as Hussey & Monday fought hard to get back on terms. Unfortunately, just towards the end of the set the third seeds broke and took the win in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
