Tennis | ITF Shrewsbury | Alastair Gray, Anton Matusevich & Joshua Paris win titles

SHREWSBURY, UK – Alastair Gray claimed the singles title, whilst Anton Matusevich & Joshua Paris took the doubles in a stacked event.

Alastair Gray entered the ITF event and was unseeded. In the first round Gray was drawn against German qualifier Constantin Frantzen. Gray took little time in settling into the match. Frantzen was outclassed by the Brit who dominated both sets. Gray eased through into the second round 6-2, 6-1.

The second round saw Gray drawn against the eighth seed Anton Matusevich. Gray stayed toe to toe with Matusevich in the first set, forcing a tiebreak. Gray edged the breaker and took the lead. The seed re-grouped in the second set, and broke the serve of Grey to level up the match. The final set saw Gray secure the break needed to move into the quarter-final 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3.

In the quarter-final Gray was against qualifier Oliver Tarvet. The young Brit battled hard against Gray, but the 23 year old forced the break of serve to take the lead. The second set was very even, as Tarvet and Gray fought to get the break. The 23 year old finally secured the break needed and moved into the semi-final 6-3, 6-4.

The semi-final saw Gray against German Henri Squire. The Brit dominated the first set and eased through to take the lead. The second set was much closer as Squire stayed toe to toe with Gray forcing a tiebreak. In the breaker Gray lept out to an early lead and didn’t look back. The Brit booked a spot in the final 6-1, 7-6(3).

In the final Gray was against fellow Brit Harry Wendelken. The first set was tight, as both players battled to get the break. It was Gray who managed to get the break right at the end of the set and took the lead. This spurred on Gray, who went on to dominate the second set, lifting the title 7-5, 6-1.

Doubles

Matusevich teamed up with Joshua Paris for the doubles event and were unseeded. In the first round the Brits drew another all British team of Max Benaim & David Quayle. Matusevich & Paris were pushed hard in the first set, with Benaim & Quayle staying toe to toe forcing a tiebreak. Matusevich & Paris eased through the breaker and took the lead. In the second set Matusevich & Paris secured the break of serve against Benaim & Quayle and moved into the quarter-final 7-6(3), 6-3.

The quarter-final saw Matusevich & Paris against the second seeds Charles Broom & Alastair Gray. The seeds got off to the better start and broke serve to take the lead. Matusevich & Paris re-grouped in the second set and broke the serve of Broom & Gray to level the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak Matusevich & Paris eased through to book a spot in the semi-final 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.

In the semi-final Matusevich & Paris were against the third seeds Henry Patten & Mark Whitehouse. The third seeds were no match for Matusevich & Paris who dominated the first set. Patten & Whitehouse tried to fight back in the second set. However, it was Matusevich & Paris that broke serve and moved into the final 6-2, 6-3.

The final saw the pair against Harry Wendelken & Oscar Weightman. Matusevich & Paris secured the break of serve against Wendelken & Weightman and took the lead. Wendelken & Weightman tried to fight back in the second set, however Matusevich & Paris once again broke serve and took the title 6-4, 6-4.

Round Up

Mark Whitehouse was defeated by Johannes Ingildsen in the first round 6-2, 6-2.

Charles Broom was defeated by Stuart Parker in the first round 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.

Dan Little was defeated by Aidan McHugh in the first round 7-6(4), 7-6(7).

Sean Hodkin was defeated by Anton Matusevich in the first round 6-4, 6-4.

Dan Cox was defeated by Henri Squire in the first round 7-6(4), 6-1.

Henry Patten was defeated by Stuart Parker in the second round 6-4, 7-6(3).

Aidan McHugh was defeated by Harry Wendelken in the second round 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Billy Harris was defeated by Felix Gill in the second round 6-4, 7-6(6).

Paul Jubb was defeated by Jack Pinnington-Jones in the second round 7-6(1), 6-3.

Felix Gill was defeated by Harry Wendelken in the quarter-final 6-3, 6-2.

Jack Pinnington-Jones was defeated by Henri Squire in the quarter-final 7-6(1), 6-1.

Stuart Parker was defeated by Harry Wendelken in the semi-final 7-5, 6-3.

Ben Jones & Dan Little were defeated by Jonathan Binding & Scott Duncan in the first round 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.

Alexis Canter & Ying Hou were defeated by Henry Searle & Thomas Welsh in the quarter-final 6-3, 7-5.

Jonathan Binding & Scott Duncan were defeated by Henry Patten & Mark Whitehouse in the quarter-final 6-4, 6-1.

Henry Searle & Thomas Welsh were defeated by Oscar Weightman & Harry Wendelken in the semi-final 6-2, 6-4.
