NOTTINGHAM, UK – Amarni Banks was unseeded at the ITF event. The Brit defeated the fourth and fifth seeds en route. Emily Appleton, Lauryn John-Baptiste, Dan Little & Mark Whitehouse all claimed doubles title.

Amarni Banks entered the ITF event and was unseeded. In the first round Banks drew fellow Brit and Wildcard entrant Emma Wilson. The first set was very close, as both players went toe to toe. Eventually, Banks broke through and took the lead. This inspired Banks as she dominated the second set to book a spot in the next round in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.

In the second round, the Brit was against fifth seed Elena Malygina. The Estonian found Banks too good in the first set, as the unseeded player broke and took the lead. The second set was much closer. The fifth seed tried to fight back and forced a tiebreak. However, Banks managed to edge through the breaker and take the match in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(6).

The quarter-final saw the Brit against fourth seed Viktoria Morvayova. The Slovakian was dominated by Banks in the first set, and was unable to get into the set. The second was a little bit closer though, as Morvayova tried to fight back. Banks was not giving an inch though, and managed to break serve to move into the next round in straight sets 6-22, 6-4.

In the semi-final Banks was against fellow Brit Emily Appleton. Banks had very little trouble with her compatriot. Appleton tried to stay with Banks, but was unable to. Banks broke serve early in both sets, and no matter what Appleton attempted, Banks was equal to it. Banks moved into the final in straight sets 6=3, 6-3.

The final saw Banks against third seed Arina Rodionova. The unseeded Brit stayed with the Australian in the first set, before Rodionova finally secured the break of serve to take the lead. Banks re-grouped in the second set and broke the seed to level up the match. The final set saw Rodionova dominate and claim the title 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

 

Women’s Doubles

Emily Appleton & Lauryn John-Baptiste teamed up and were the second seeds. In the first round, they were against Eliz Maloney & Emma Wilson. Th first set was very close, as both pairs stayed close. However, just as it looked to be heading to a tiebreak, the second seeds broke serve and took the lead. The second set saw the seeds dominate and move into the next round in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.

The quarter-final saw the Brits against Julie Belgraver & Clara Vlasselaer. The French/Belgian pair found the Brits too good in the first set. Appleton & John-Baptiste broke early and took the lead. The second set, though, was much closer as both pairs went toe to toe. Eventually, the seeds managed to break serve and moved into the next round 6-3, 7-5.

In the semi-final the second seeds were against the fourth seeds Lu Ja-Jing & Vikoria Morvayova. The Chinese/Slovakian pairing got off to the better start and broke the serve of the Brits to take the lead. However, the second set saw the Brits dominate and level up the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak, the second seeds edged ahead and took the win 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.

The final saw Appleton & John-Baptiste against the top seeds Rutuja Bhosale & Arianne Hartono. The first set saw both pairs stay close, but ultimately, it was the Brits who managed to get the break of serve for the lead. The second set saw the Brits break early and lift the title 6-4, 6-3.

Men’s Doubles

Daniel Little & Mark Whitehouse were the third seeds. In the first round, the Brits were against Patrick Brady & Adam Jones. The first set was very close, as neither British pair wanted to give an inch. Eventually, a tiebreak ensued. In the breaker, Little & Whitehouse dominated and took the set. The second set was a little easier, as the third seeds broke to take the match 7-6(2), 6-3.

The quarter-final saw the seeds against Joe Tyler & Harry Wendelken. Little & Whitehouse broke early in the first set and took the lead. Tyler & Wendelken re-grouped in the second set. After breaking the seeds serve early, Tyler & Wendelken levelled up the match. The ensuing match tiebreak saw the third seeds edged through to take the win 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.

In the semi-final Little & Whitehouse were against the second seeds Giles Hussey & Ben Jones. The second seeds actually got off to the better start, breaking the third seeds early to take the lead. However, this just spurred on Little & Whitehouse who dominated the second set to level up the match. The match tiebreak saw the third seeds ease through and book a spot in the final 3-6, 6-1, 10-4.

The final saw Little & Whitehouse against fourth seeds August Holmgren & Alfredo Perez. The Brits stayed with the fourth seeds in the first set, and managed to take a break of serve and the lead. The second set saw the Dane/American fight back breaking the Brits early to level up the match. The match tiebreak was very close, and eventually, the Brits edged through to take the win 6-4, 3-6, 12-10.

 

 

Nottingham Round Up

Alice Gillan was defeated by Johanne Svendsen in the first round 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Kristina Paskauskas was defeated by Lauryn John-Baptiste in the first round 1-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Soumeya Anane & Lauren McMinn were defeated by Anna Popescu & Ingrid Vojcinakova in the first round 6-1,6-1.

Madeleine Brooks & Holly Hutchinson were defeated by Elena Malygina & Katarina Stresnakova in the first round 0-0 (RET).

Paulina Jurkowska & Josie Ward were defeated by Diana Martynov & Marine Szostak in the first round 6-1, 7-6(4).
