Tennis | ITF Glasgow | Sonay Kartal, Alastair Gray & Aidan McHugh claim titles

GLASGOW, UK – Sonay Kartal & Alastair Gray both entered the ITF event following a successful week in Birmingham & Shrewsbury. Kartal & Gray both took the titles claiming back to back events.

Sonay Kartal received a wildcard for the ITF event in Glasgow. Following the successful week in Birmingham where the young Brit had won the title. In the first round the Brit drew the eighth seed Anna Sisokva. The Czech player was totally outclassed by Kartal. The young Brit dominated from the start and moved into the next round in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

The second round saw Kartal against Quinn Gleason. The American got off to the better start, breaking the Brit to take the first set. However, Kartal re-grouped in the following set and managed to break the serve of Gleason and level the match. In the final set the Brit once again secured the break of serve and moved into the next round 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In the quarter-final Kartal was against the second seed Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove. The Dutch player went toe to toe with the Brit, and forced a tiebreak. However, in the breaker Kartal edged ahead and took the lead. The second set saw the Dutch player fight hard, but Kartal took the break of serve and moved into the semi-final 7-6(6), 6-4.

The semi-final saw Kartal against the fourth seed fellow Brit Jodie Burrage. Kartal was on fire and was not going to be stopped. No matter what Burrage threw at her, Kartal was equal to. The young Brit secured the break of serve required in both sets to move into the final 6-3, 6-4.

In the final Kartal was agasint Barbora Palicova. The match was extremely tight, as both players stayed toe to toe. The Czech player forced a tiebreak in the first set. Kartal edged the breaker and took the lead. The second set saw both players staying together, not giving an inch. Kartal eventually managed to secure the break of serve and lifted the title 7-6(5), 7-5.

 

Mens Event

Alastair Gray got into the event on his ranking. The Brit had claimed the title in Shrewsbury last week and had been on great form. In the first round Gray was against Tobias Simon. The German stayed with the Brit and forced a breaker in both sets. The tiebreaks were very close, but eventually, it was Gray that edged through both to move into the next round 7-6(5), 7-6(5).

In the second round Gray was against third seed Gijs Brouwer. The Dutch player started better, and broke the serve of the Brit to take the lead. However, Gray re-grouped in the second set and managed to break Brouwer and level up the match. In the final set Gray dominated Brouwer and moved into the next round 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The quarter-final saw Gray against eighth seed Anton Matusevich. The seed got a break of serve against Gray to take the first set. However, Gray once again re-grouped in the second and broke Matusevich to level up the match. In the final set, both players went toe to toe and it looked to be heading to a tiebreak. Gray managed to get the break of serve and moved into the semi-final 4-6, 6-3. 7-5.

In the semi-final Gray was against Wild Card Harry Wendelken. In a rematch of the Shrewsbury final the Brits both fought hard. However, Gray found Wendelken much easier to deal with this time, and broke the serve of the other Brit in both sets to move into the final 6-3, 6-3.

The final was a rematch of the Shrewsbury semi-final as Gray was against Henri Squire. The German found Gray too strong in the first set as the Brit broke serve to move ahead. However, the German fought back in the second set, forcing a tiebreak. Squire edged the tiebreak and levelled up the match. The final set was very close, as both players stayed toe to toe. Once again a tiebreak ensused. This time it was Gray who edged through to take the title 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(4).

Mens Doubles

Aidan McHugh teamed up with Brouwer and the pair were the top seeds. Their first round match was against the all British team of Oscar Weightman & Wendelken. The top seeds were taken to a tiebreak in the first set. The Brit/Dutch pair edged through the breaker and took the lead. The second set saw McHugh & Brouwer dominate and move into the quarter-final 7-6(5), 6-2.

In the quarter-final McHugh & Brouwer were against Scott Duncan & Ewan Moore. The Brits were no match for the top seeds in the first set, with the Brit/Dutch breaking serve and taking the lead. The second set was a little closer as Duncan & Moore tried to fight back. Ulitmately the top seeds progressed through 6-3, 7-5.

The semi-final saw McHugh & Brouwer against Euan McIntosh & Matthew Rankin. The top seeds were too powerful for the Brits. The Brit/Dutch pair strolled through the match, dominating both sets. McHugh & Brouwer moved into the final in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

In the final the top seeds were against Charles Broom & Constantin Frantzen. The Brit/German started better and got the break on the top seeds to take the lead. McHugh & Brouwer forced a tiebreak in the second set. Once in the breaker the top seeds dominated and levelled up the match. The final match tiebreak saw the top seeds in full control, taking the title 4-6, 7-6(1), 10-4.

Alexis Canter was defeated by Aidan McHugh in the first round 6-4, 6-2.

Scott Duncan was defeated by Oscar Weightman in the first round 6-1, 6-1.

Ben Jones was defeated by Billy Harris in the first round 6-2, 6-3.

Joshua Paris was defeated by Martin Damm in the first round 7-6(5), 6-4.

Mark Whitehouse was defeated by Anton Matusevich in the first round 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Felix Gill was defeated by Constatin Frantzen in the first round 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-0.

Dan Cox was defeated by Gijs Brouwer in the first round 7-5, 6-2.

Sean Hodkin was defeated by David Poljak in the first round 6-0, 6-7(5), 6-1.

Charles Broom was defeated by Stuart Parker in the first round 6-3, 6-4.

Jack Pinnington Jones was defeated by Alexis Galarneau in the first round 7-6(4), 6-3.

Tara Moore was defeated by Deborah Chiesa in the first round 6-4, 6-4.

Nadia Rawson was defeated by Catherine Harrison in the first round 6-4, 6-2.

Freya Christie was defeated by Valeria Savinykh in the first round 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

Anna Brogan was defeated by Jasmine Conway in the first round 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.

Ranah Akua Stoiber was defeated by Jana Fett in the first round 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Mingge Xu was defeated by Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in the first round 6-1, 6-2.

Patrick Brady & Mattias Southcombe were defeated by Charles Broom & Constantin Frantzen in the semi-final 7-5, 6-4.
