EDGBASTON, BIRMINGHAM, UK – Anton Matusevich entered the ITF event and was the fourth seed. The Brit claimed the singles title.
Anton Matusevich entered the ITF event and was the fourth seed. In the first round the seed was against fellow Brit and qualifier Fabio Nestola. The 19-year-old stayed with Matusevich at the start of the first set, before the seed broke serve and took the lead. The second set saw Matusevich break early and Nestola was unable to get back on terms. The seed moved into the next round in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
The second round saw Matusevich against another Brit, Toby Martin. The older Brit managed to stay with the seed at the start, before Matusevich took an early break and the lead. The second set saw Martin fight harder, and staying with the seed. Eventually, though the younger Brit got the break needed and moved into the next round 6-3, 6-4.
In the quarter-final the fourth seed was against the seventh seed Niels Visker. The Dutchman found the Brit too strong in the first set, as Matusevich broke early for the lead. The second set saw Visker stay with Matusevich at the start, but, eventually, the seed broke serve and moved into the next round 6-3, 6-4.
The semi-final saw Matusevich against sixth seed and former junior Wimbledon Champion Henry Searle. The fourth seed got off to the better start and broke early to take the lead. The second set, however, saw Searle re-group. The younger Brit stayed close to the fourth seed and broke serve to level up the match. The final set was very close. Neither player giving an inch. Just as it looked to be heading to a tiebreak, Matusevich broke serve and took the win 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
In the final Matusevich was against eighth seed Federico Bondioli. The Italian found the Brit too strong in the first set as the fourth seed dominated and took the lead. In the second set Bondioli re-grouped. The Italian managed to break serve early and level up the match. The final set was very very close. Both Matusevich & Bondioli were trying hard to break serve. Once again, it looked like it could be heading to a tiebreak. However, Matusevich managed to get the break of serve and lifted the title 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
