Brit of the Week
Jay Clarke entered the ATP Challenger event in Burnie, Australia and was seeded 16. The Brit had a bye in the first round. In the second round the seed was against Alessandro Bega. The Italian struggled to hold serve in the first set and Clarke dominated losing only one game. In the second set Bega began to play better, however the Brit managed to break serve again and move into the third round 6-1, 6-4.
In the third round the Brit was against the top seed Mirza Bašić. The Bosnian was favourite to win the clash on paper. Clarke, however, had other ideas. In the first set the Brit dominated again, with Bašić unable to compete with the game of the Brit who lost only one game. The second set saw the Bosnian trying to get back into the match, holding serve. Clarke managed to obtain the break needed to progress into the quarter-final 6-1, 6-3.
The quarter-final saw Clarke against the tenth seed Stefano Napolitano. The Italian was a much tougher opponent and managed to break the Brits serve. Napolitano went on to hold and take the set to lead. In the second set Clarke re-grouped and managed to break the tenth seed and levelled up the match. The final set was competitive with both giving everything, but ultimately it was the Brit who came out on top breaking to take the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In the semi-final the Brit was against Steven Diez. The Canadian was unseeded, however gave Clarke all sorts of problems. The first set was very even with both giving everything. It was Diez that obtained the break, and the Brit was unable to break back. The second set was much the same, and although Clarke fought hard he was unable to prevent the break and lost the match 6-4, 6-4.
