Cameron Norrie earned a much needed win in his Indian Wells opener against Italian Luca Nardi. The British number two, who has been struggling for form recently, got off to a fast start as he worked the angles against Nardi. The Italian didn’t have the power to assert his authority on the match and the Norrie backhand was effective as he broke on his fourth break point in the second game.

There was no signs of things changing with Norrie cruising to a 5-0 lead with Nardi helpless from the back of the court. The Italian failed to create any power as Norrie was the aggressor throughout the opening set and pushed Nardi behind the baseline. Another Nardi shot went into the net and Norrie converted his third set point to seal a comfortable 28 minute set.

In the second set, Nardi started hitting the ball more cleanly as he claimed his first game of the match before saving break point to hold for 2-2. Still the match up favoured Norrie as he was able to dictate the tempo of the rallies with his clinical backhand. Some sharp net skills got Nardi out of trouble when it mattered most but eventually Norrie broke to love in the eighth game to have the chance to serve for the match.

A forehand smash winner at the net secured a phenomenal performance and victory, advancing to the second round at Indian Wells.

Playing Styles and Prediction

Lehecka has had an incredible start to the season having won the Brisbane title before reaching the semi-finals in Doha. The Czech Republican has talent and quality in abundance but will now be hoping to stay fit and healthy in order to produce the results required to push for a place in the world’s top ten.

Norrie will need to be aggressive on return as he aims to take time away from Lehecka and rush his shots. Meanwhile Lehecka will be aggressive on serve and approach the net to finish off points. The variety and quality Lehecka produces is expected to cause Norrie problems but the Brit will fancy his chances to test Lehecka on favourable conditions.

Prediction: Lehecka in three sets.
