Katie Boulter def. Ivana Jorovic 6-4 6-3
There were a few raised eyebrows as the team nominations came out with Olga Danilovic dropped in favour of Ivana Jorovic, who registered a couple of early wins for Serbia. If the switch in expected names had come as a surprise, Boulter showed no signs concern as she ripped into a 3-0 lead. However, a flurry of breaks saw her just hang on to a 4-2 buffer, before sealing the first set.
Boulter was the first to make a breakthrough in the second set but was again pegged back but took an advantage before having to fight tooth and nail to defend four break points on her own serve in what proved to be a pivotal game, as she broke for the match.
Boulter, buzzing, said: “To start my debut and to come out with four wins is probably better than I ever imagined.
“I think it definitely gives me confidence, considering I’ve illness problems before. To know that I can go through four tough matches – I actually did the same last week in St Petersburg. To do that consistently week after week means a lot to me and I know it can give me a lot of confidence going forward.”
Britain will look to keep their group stage unbeaten run going with Johanna Konta facing Aleksandra Krunic.
