WINSTON SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA, USA – Neal Skupski & Lloyd Glasspool entered the ATP event and were the second seeds. The Brits made the final before being defeated.
ATP/WTA
Neal Skupski & Lloyd Glasspool were the second seeds in Winston Salem. In their first round, the Brits were against wildcard pairing Filippo Moroni & Matthew Thomson. The first set was very close as the wildcard pair stayed with Brits and forced a tiebreak. In the breaker the Brits eased through and took the lead. The second set was much easier for the Brits as they dominated Moroni & Thomson and moved into the next round in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-2.
In the quarter-final the Brits were against another wildcard pairing of Matt Ebden & JP Smith. The Australians stayed close to the seeds in the first set, and looked to be forcing a breaker. However, Skupski & Glasspool broke at just the right time and took the lead. The second set saw the Australians fight back, breaking serve and levelled up the match. The final set was a match tiebreak and was very close. However, Skupski & Glasspool edged through and into the next round 7-5, 4-6, 11-9.
The semi-final saw the Brits against Marcelo Demoliner & Matwe Middelkoop. The Brazilian/Dutch stayed with the seeds in the first set and forced a tiebreak. The tiebreak was close, but Demoliner & Middelkoop edged through and took the lead. The second set was dominated by the Brits and Skupski & Glasspool levelled up the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak the Brits edged through and moved into the next round 6-7(5), 6-2, 11-9.
In the final Skupski & Glasspool were against Americans Nathaniel Lammons & Jackson Withrow. The Americans managed to break the Brits quickly in the first set to take the lead. The second set was a little closer as Skupski & Glasspool stayed with Lammons & Withrow. Unfortunately, the Americans managed to break serve and take the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Challenger & ITF
Sarah Beth Grey teamed up with Nefisa Berberovic in ITF Vigo and were the second seeds. The Brit/Bosnian drew Maria Garcia Cid & Beatrice Laura Pirtac. The unseeded pair got the jump on the seeds and broke serve to take the lead. Grey & Berberovic re-grouped in the second set and dominated the unseeded pair to level up the match. The ensuing match tiebreak it was the seeds who eased through to the next round 3-6, 6-1, 10-5.
The quarter-final saw the seeds against Eva Alvarez Sande & Valentina Losciale. The first set saw the second seeds ease through against the unseeded pairing to take the lead. The second set was even easier, as Grey & Berberovic dominated and took the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
In the semi-final Grey & Berberovic were against third seeds Karola Patricia Bejenaru & Yasmine Mansouri. Bejenaru & Mansouri broke the second seeds in the first set and took the lead. The second set saw the Brit/Bosnian fight back, and break the third seeds to level up the match. The final set was a match tiebreak, and Grey & Berberovic edged through to book a spot in the final 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
The final saw the second seeds against unseeded pair Anastasia Abbagnato & Patricija Paukstyte. The Italian/Lithuanian got the better of the Brit/Bosnian in the first set and broke serve to take the lead. The second set saw Grey & Berberovic break serve and level up the match. The ensuing match tiebreak was very close. However, the seeds edged through and took the title 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.
Doubles Round Up
Joe Salisbury with Rajeev Ram were defeated by Nathaniel Lammons & Jackson Withrow in the first round in Winston Salem 7-6(0), 7-6(4).
Billy Harris with Henrique Rocha were defeated by Constantin Bittoun Kouzmine & Vladimir Uzhylovsky in the semi-final in Augsburg 6-3, 6-7, 10-7.
Nicolas Philibert with Matteo Covato were defeated by Samir Hamza Reguig & Leopold Zima in the first round in Monastir 6-1, 7-6(5).
Katie Dyson with Tilde Stromquist were defeated by Kristina Milenkovic & Sandra Samir in the quarter-final in Monastir 6-3, 6-4.
Emily Webley-Smith with Sofia Shapatava were defeated by Pia Lovric & Adrienn Nagy in the first round in Prerov 3-6, 6-4, 10-4.
Abigail Amos with Arabella Koller were defeated by Mariya Sinitsyna & Arina Solomatina in the semi-final in Baku 6-4, 6-4.
Next Week Brits play in Flushing Meadow, Mallorca, Zhangjiagang, Portugal, Switzerland, Hungary, Tunisia, Czech Republic, Holland, Spain, Thailand & Azerbaijan.
