Tennis | Doubles Round Up | Nicholls wins title at WTA Austin

  • Olivia Nicholls claimed the doubles title in Austin
  • Brit and Australian partner were unseeded
  • Didn’t drop a set en route
AUSTIN, TEXAS, USA – Olivia Nicholls teamed up with Australian Olivia Gadecki and were unseeded. The pair lifted the trophy without dropping a set.

Olivia Nicholls teamed up Olivia Gadecki and the pair were unseeded. The Brit/Australian drew Danielle Collins & Fernanda Contreras Gomez in the first round. The American/Mexican stayed close to Nicholls & Gadecki in the first set, before the Brit/Australian broke serve for the lead. The second set was easier for Nicholls & Gadecki as they broke early and moved into the next round 6-4, 6-3.

The quarter-final saw the Brit/Australian against Anna Danilina & Shuai Zhang. The Kazakh/Chinese pair stayed with Nicholls & Gadecki at the start of the first set. However, the Brit/Australian secured the vital break of serve and took the lead. The second set was more of the same as Danilina & Zhang tried to stay with Nicholls & Gadecki. Eventually, the Brit/Australian secured the break of serve and moved into the next round.

In the semi-final the opponents were fourth seeds Tereza Mihalikova & Yanina Wickmayer. The Slovak/Belgian pairing were unable to take to the court and handed the win to Nicholls & Gadecki, meaning the unseeded pair were in the final 0-0 (RET).

The final saw the Brit/Australian against Bibane Schoofs & Katarzyna Kawa. The Dutch/Polish pair were outclassed in the first set, as Nicholls & Gadecki dominated to take the lead. The second set was a little closer. as Schoofs & Kawa found their range. However, the Brit/Australian pair secured a vital break of serve to lift the trophy in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

 

 

Doubles Round Up

Maia Lumsden with Iryna Shymanovich were defeated by Irina Khromacheva & Yana Sizikova in the first round in Austin 6-0, 6-1.

Samantha Murray Sharan with Jessika Ponchet were defeated by Peyton Stearns & Sloane Stephens in the first round in Austin 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.

Dan Evans & Henry Patten were defeated by Romain Arneodo & Sam Weissborn in the first round in Acapulco 7-6(4), 6-0.

Julian Cash with Robert Galloway were defeated by Harri Heliovaara & John Peers in the quarter-final in Acapulco 4-6, 7-6(7), 10-5.

Neal Skupski with Santiago Gonzalez were defeated by Jan Zieliinski & Hugo Nys in the final in Acapulco 6-3, 6-2.

Jamie Murray with Michael Venus were defeated by Yuki Bhambri & Robin Haase in the quarter-final in Dubai 6-4, 7-6(1).

Lloyd Glasspool with Jean-Julien Rojer were defeated by Ivan Dodig & Austin Krajicek in the quarter-final in Dubai 6-7(5), 6-3, 10-5.

Luke Johnson with George Goldhoff were defeated by Constantin Frantzen & Hendrik Jebens in the first round in Lille 7-5, 7-5.

Joshua Paris with Antoine Escoffier were defeated by Marcus Willis & Christian Harrison in the semi-final in Lille 6-2, 6-2.

Marcus Willis with Christian Harrison defeated Titouan Droguet & Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the final in Lille 7-6(6), 6-3.

Giles Hussey & Harry Wendelken were defeated by Ammar Elamin & Noah Lopez in the quarter-final in Villena 6-3, 7-6(4).

James Davis & Matthew Summers defeated Marco Berti & Federico Iannaccone in the final in Villena 6-1, 6-2.

Ben Jones with Philip Henning were defeated by Aleksandre Bakshi & David Perez Sanz in the first round in Sharm-El-Sheikh 6-2, 6-2.

Danielle Daley with Anouck Vrancken Peeters were defeated by Karola Patricia Bejenaru & Andre Lukosuite in the first round in Sharm-El-Sheikh 6-2, 6-3.
