Tennis | Doubles Round Up | Cash & Skupski battle for the title in ATP 250 Delray Beach

DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA, USA – Julian Cash and Neal Skupski battled each other for the Delray Beach title in this week’s pick of the doubles events.

Neal Skupski & Santiago Gonzalez were the top seeds at the ATP 250 event. In the first round the Brit/Mexican were against alternates Liam Broady & Hans Hach Verdugo. The top seeds dominated the first set against their Brit/Mexican opponenets. The second seed was a little closer as Broady & Hach Verdugo fought hard. Eventually, the top seeds broke serve and moved into the next round 6-2, 6-3.

The quarter-final saw Skupski & Gonzalez against Wildcard pair William Blumberg & Rinky Hijikata. The American/Australian surprised the top seeds, staying with them in the first set. Eventually, Blumberg & Hijikata secured the vital break of serve and took the lead. The second set saw the top seeds fight back. Skupski & Gonzalez broke right at the end of the set to level up the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak, it was the top seeds that edged through into the next round 5-7, 7-5, 10-7.

In the semi-final the Brit/Mexican were against Diego Hidalgo & Cristian Rodriguez. The Ecuadorian/Columbian pair went toe to toe with the top seeds, forcing a tiebreak in the first set. The tiebreak was very close but eventually the top seeds edged through and into the lead. The second set was more of the same as Hidalgo & Rodriguez forced another breaker. Again the seeds edged through and into the final 7-6(9), 7-6(5).

On the other side of the draw Julian Cash had paired up with Robert Galloway and were the third seeds. In the first round the Brit/American drew Australian pair Max Purcell & Jordan Thompson. The first set saw the seeds break early and took the lead. The second set was much closer as Purcell & Thompson stayed closer. However, eventually, the seeds broke serve and moved into the next round 6-3, 6-4.

In the quarter-final the seeds were against Andre Goransson & Luis David Martinez. The first set was incredibly close, but Cash & Galloway broke serve at the end of the set to take the lead. The second set saw Cash & Galloway break earlier and move into the next round 7-5, 6-4.

The semi-final saw the Brit/American against second seeds Hugo Nys & Jan Zielinski. Cash & Galloway fought hard and broke the second seeds serve to take the lead. The second set was much closer as Nys & Zielinski stayed with the third seeds. Eventually, Cash & Galloway broke serve and moved into the final 6-4, 7-5.

This set up a final with the top seeds. The first set was very close as the top seeds and third seeds fought hard. It looked to be heading to a tiebreak. However, Skupski & Gonzalez broke serve right at the end of the set to take the lead. The second set was more of the same. Again it looked to be heading to a tie break. This time, though, Cash & Galloway broke right at the end and levelled up the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak it was the third seeds that dominated and lifted the title 5-7, 7-5, 10-2.

Doubles Round Up

Henry Patten with Francisco Cabral were defeated by William Blumberg & Rinky Hijikata in the first round in Delray Beach 6-4, 6-2.

Billy Harris with Rudolf Molleker were defeated by Petros Tsitsipas & Sergio Matos Gornes in the first round in Manama 6-2, 6-7(2), 10-7.

Luke Johnson with Skander Mansouri were defeated by Patrik Niklas-Salminen & Vasil Kirkov in the semi-final in Manama 3-6, 6-1, 11-9.

Joshua Paris with Antoine Escoffier were defeated by Antoine Hoang & Gregoire Jacq in the first round in Cherbourg 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.

Lance Nisbet with Kamil Majchrzak were defeated by Gianmarco Gandolfi & Gabriele Vulpitta in the first round in Hammamet 6-3, 3-6, 10-5.

Summer Yardley with Marika Jones were defeated by Gloria Ceschi & Judith Perello Saavedra in the first round in Hammamet 7-5, 6-1.

Jay Clarke with Sandro Kopp defeated Corentin Denolly & Damien Wenger in the final in Hammamet 6-2, 7-5.

James Markiewicz & Michael Shaw were defeated by Joao Domingues & Jaime Faria in the quarter-final in Vila Real de Santo Antonio 6-4, 6-3.

Emily Appleton with Martyna Kubka were defeated by Maja Chwalinska & Jesika Maleckova in the semi-final in Altenkirchen 6-3, 6-3.

Finn Bass with David Perez Sanz were defeated by Erik Arutiunian & Pavel Verbin in the quarter-final in Sharm-El-Sheikh 0-0 (RET).

Emile Hudd & David Stevenson were defeated by Jan Hrazdil & Rei Sakamoto in the final in Sharm-El-Sheikh 6-3, 6-7(8), 11-9.
