Brit of the Week

Jay Clarke entered the ITF event in Antalya and was the seventh seed in the singles. In the first round the Brit drew qualifier Sergei Pogosian. The seed dominated the first set and broke the qualifier easily to take the lead. The second set was more of the same as Pogosian was unable to hold serve. The qualifier was clearly struggling and eventually had to retire from the match. The Brit moved on in straight sets 6-2, 3-0(RET).

The second round saw Clarke against another qualifier, this time it was Gheorghe Schintele. The Romanian stayed with the Brit at the start, before the seed secured the break of serve and moved into the lead. The second set saw Schintele totally outplayed by Clarke, who broke at will. The Romanian just couldn’t handle the game of the Brit and Clarke eased through into the quarter-final 6-3, 6-0.

In the quarter-final Clarke was against unseeded Moldovan Ilya Snitari. The Brit was on a roll now and was in dominating form. Snitari found the seed too good and struggled to hold serve. Clarke managed to break quickly in both sets and the Moldovan was not able to get back into the match. Clarke moved on in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

The semi-final saw the Brit against German fifth seed Tim Handel. Clarke and the German stayed toe to toe at the start, before the seventh seed managed to break serve and take the lead. The second set saw Clarke back to dominating. Handel could not get back into the set and the Brit moved into the final 6-4, 6-2.

In the final Clarke was against the top seed Nerman Fatic. This was the closest match so far for the Brit, as the Bosnian stayed with Clarke at the start of the first set. Eventually, Clarke managed to break serve and take the lead. The second set was even closer, with Clarke & Fatic staying toe to toe. It looked to be heading to a tiebreak, however, the Brit finally secured the break of serve needed to take the title 6-4, 7-5.

Doubles

The doubles saw Clarke team up with Josip Simundza. The Brit/Croatian pair drew Turkish second seeds Sarp Agabigun & S Mert Ozdemir. The unseeded pair broke the second seeds early in the first set to take the lead. The Turks however, re-grouped in the second and levelled up the match. The ensuing match tiebreak saw the Brit/Croat pair ease ahead and take the match 6-3, 3-6, 10-5.

In the quarter-final Clarke & Simundza were against unseeded pair Daniil Golubev & Evgenii Tyurnev. The Brit/Croatian broke early in the first set and took the lead. The second set saw Golubev & Tyurnev try to mount a fight back. However, Clarke & Simundza managed to hold on and break serve to move into the next round 6-3, 6-4.

The semi-final saw the Brit/Croat against the fourth seeds Stefan Popovic & Iiya Snitari. Clarke & Simundza broke right at the end of the first set and took the lead. The second set saw the seeds fight back. Popovic & Snitari broke serve and levelled up the match. The ensuing match tiebreak saw Clarke & Simundza edge through and take a spot in the final 7-5, 4-6, 10-6.

In the final Clarke & Simundza were against another unseeded pair Cengiz Aksu & Mert Naci Turker. The Turks dominated the first set, as the Brit/Croat struggled to to hold serve. However, Clarke & Simundza fought back in the second set, forcing a tiebreak. In the breaker the Brit/Croat edged through and levelled up the match. The ensuing match tiebreak was also very close, but it was Clarke & Simundza who eventually edged through and lifted the title 1-6, 7-6(8), 10-8.
