Brit of the Week
Oliver Tarvet entered the ITF event and was the eighth seed. The Brit was drawn against a qualifier Mitchell Lee in the first round. The American managed to stay with the Brit in the first set, however, Tarvet broke serve and took the lead. The second set saw the seed dominate Lee and ease through into the next round 6-4, 6-1.
In the second round Tarvet was against Nikita Filin. The American junior stayed close to the Brit in the first set, before the Brit broke to take the lead. The second set was a little easier for the Brit who broke early. Filin was unable to get back into the match, and Tarvet moved through in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
The quarter-final saw Tarvet against Lucky Loser Jay Dylan Hara Friend. The seed dominated the first set to take the lead. The second set was much closer and the Japanese player forced a tiebreak. In the breaker, the Brit edged through and took the match in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(7).
In the semi-final the Brit was against second seed Strong Kirchheimer. The American found Tarvet too good. The Brit dominated from the outset, as the American was unable to stay with him. Tarvet soon had the match in the bag and had moved on to the final in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
The final saw the Brit against unseeded American Nathan Ponwith. The first set saw the American and Brit stay close together at the start. Eventually, Ponwith broke serve and took the lead. The second set saw Tarvet re-group. The Brit broke the serve of Ponwith and managed to level up the match. The final set saw Tarvet and Ponwith stay close. Eventually, Tarvet secured the vital break of serve and took the title 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
