Brit of the Week
Matthew Summers came through qualifying and made the main draw. In the first round the Brit was against Chinese player Nidunjianzan Fnu. The Brit was the lower ranked player and stayed toe to toe with the Chinese in the first set. Eventually, Summers broke serve and took the lead. The second set saw Summers dominate Fnu and take the match in the straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
The second round saw Summers against third seed Alex Knaff. The Brit dominated the Dutch player in the first set, breaking at will and taking the lead. The second set saw Knaff re-group and dominate Summers to level up the match. The final set was fairly close. Neither player gave an inch, however, eventually Summers broke Knaff and moved into the next round 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
In the quarter-final the Brit was against Collin Altamirano. The American pushed the Brit hard. In the first set both players went toe to toe and forced a tiebreak. The tiebreak saw the Summers ease through the breaker and take the lead. The second set was also very close. Altamirano looked to be forcing another tiebreak, however, Summers managed to break serve right at the end to take the match in straight sets 7-6(3), 7-5.
The semi-final saw Summers against another qualifier. Japanese player Jay Dylan Hara Friend. Summers had very little difficulty in the first set, breaking Friend serve early and taking the lead. The second set was more of the same and the Brit again broke early to move into the final in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
In the final Summers was against the top seed Learner Tien. The Brit tried hard and in the first set managed to keep with Tien at the start. However, the American showed his ranking and broke Summers to take the lead. The second set was much easier for the top seed. Tien dominated the Brit and put an end to the excellent run the qualifier had. Tien took the match 6-3, 6-1.
