Brit of the Week

Loughborough hosted an ITF event and the field was packed with Brits. Ryan Peniston was the top seed. In the first round Peniston was against Stuart Parker. In the first set the top seed got off to the better start and managed to break the serve of Parker. Parker mounted a fightback in the second set forcing a tiebreak, which Parker won and levelled the match. The final set saw both Brits stay toe to toe, and a tiebreak again ensued. This time though, the top seed edged through and into the next round 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(5).

The second round saw Peniston against American Martin Damm. The top seed was far too good for the American, breaking serve easily. The Brit eased through the first set and took the lead. The second set saw Peniston dominate Damm. The Brit didn’t lose a game all set to move into the next round 6-2, 6-0.

In the quarter-final Peniston was against the seventh seed Billy Harris. The Brits stayed toe to toe and forced a tiebreak. The tiebreak was a battle, with Harris eventually pulling through and into the lead. In the second set, both players again stayed with each other. Another tiebreak followed. This time it was Peniston who edged ahead and levelled up the match. In the final set Peniston finally managed to break the serve of Harris and book a spot in the semi-final 6-7(10), 7-6(6), 6-4.

The semi-final saw Peniston against fourth seed Aidan McHugh. The top seed dominated the match from start to finish. No matter what McHugh tried he was unable to get into the match. The top seed stormed through the match in straight sets to make the final 6-2, 6-1.

In the final Peniston was against the second seed Antoine Escoffier. The Frenchman broke the serve of Peniston in the first set to take the lead. The Brit fought back in the second, breaking Escoffier to level the match. The final set saw the Frenchman once again break the serve of Peniston. Escoffier took the title 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Special Mention

Hannah Klugman received a wildcard into the junior event Les Petis As in France. The young Brit sycthed through the field to make the final. The 12 year old was defeated by the third seed 13 year old German Julia Stusek 6-3, 6-3. Klugman is only the second British Girl to make the final, the last was Laura Robson in 2008.
