Brit of the Week

Johannus Monday was the sixth seed in the ITF event. Having won the doubles in Dallas last weekend, Monday travelled over to Michigan to look for more success. The Brit drew Michael Zheng in the first round. The first set saw the Brit break quickly to take the lead. Zheng tried to fight back in the second set, but Monday was too good and secured the vital break of serve to move into the next round in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

The second round saw Monday against qualifier Lui Maxted. The seed and the qualifier fought hard and it took a break of serve by the sixth seed to get the lead. The second set was more of the same. Maxted stayed close at first to his fellow Brit, before Monday once again got the vital break of serve and moved into the next round 6-4, 6-4.

In the quarter-final the Brit was against Joshua Sheehy. The seed dominated the first set and eased into the lead. The second set was a little closer. Monday and Sheehy went toe-to-toe to start with, before the Brit managed to get the break of serve to take the lead. Sheehy could not get back on terms and the Brit moved on 6-2, 6-4.

The semi-final saw Monday against another unseeded American Kyle Kang. The Brit secured an early break of serve to take the lead. Kang re-grouped in the second set and secured a break of serve to level up the match. The final set was close again, with Kang and Monday fighting hard. Eventually, it was the seed who broke through and got the win to move into the final 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

In the final Monday was against top seed and fellow Brit Aidan McHugh. Although higher ranked, McHugh was unable to do anything with the game of Monday. The sixth seed broke at will, dominating the match from the outset. Monday eased through and lifted the title in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
