Brit of the Week

Aidan McHugh entered the ITF event in Illinois and was the second seed. In the first round the Brit drew American Aidan Kim. McHugh secured the early break of serve and took the lead. Kim, however, re-grouped in the second set and stayed with McHugh. It looked to be heading to a tiebreak, however, the American managed to break the Brit’s serve and level up the match. The Brit dominated the final set and moved into the next round 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

The second round saw McHugh against Shunsuke Mitsui. The Japanese player stayed with the seed and didn’t give anything away. Mitsui forced a tiebreak which the Brit dominated and took the lead. The second set was much easier for McHugh, as the Brit dominated and moved into the next round in straight sets 7-6(2), 6-2.

In the quarter-final the Brit was against unseeded American Alexander Bernard. The first set was once again a fight and looked to be heading to a tiebreak. However, McHugh managed to break serve right at the end to take the lead. The second st was much easier for McHugh, as the Brit once again dominated and moved into the next round in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.

The semi-final saw McHugh against third seed Naoki Nakagawa. The Japanese stayed toe to toe with the Brit at the start of the first set, before the second seed managed to break serve and take the lead. The second set was more of the same, and for McHugh it went exactly the same way. The Brit moved into the final in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

In the final McHugh was against fifth seed Amercian Cannon Kingsley. The Brit started well and had a big advantage against the American. Kingsley managed to pull the score line back, and was actually close to levelling up with 4 break points. However, McHugh stood firm and held serve to take the first set. The second started even better for the Brit, who broke right at the start. McHugh again held firm and lifted the trophy 6-4, 6-3.
