Sonay Kartal was seventh seed in Italy. The Brit drew wildcard Lisa Pigato in the first round. The Italian found the Brit too strong in the first set, as Kartal dominated. The seed took the first set comfortably despite Pigato trying to fight hard. The second set was a little closer as the Italian found her game. However, Kartal secured the vital break of serve and moved into the next round in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

The second round saw the Brit against Seone Mendez. The Australian struggled in the first set, as Kartal broke early and took the lead. The second set was much closer, as the Australian stayed with the Brit and forced a tiebreak. Mendez edged ahead in the breaker, and Kartal couldn’t get back in the set. The final set though, saw the Brit dominate again and move into the next round 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2.

In the quarter-final Kartal was against the top seed Arantxa Rus. The first set was very close, as both stayed toe to toe. Eventually, the Brit broke serve right at the end to take the lead. The second set saw the top seed dominate as the Brit struggled to hold serve. Rus levelled up the match and a deciding set was needed. Kartal re-grouped for the final set, and dominated Rus to move into the next round 7-5, 1-6, 6-1.

The semi-final saw the Brit against eighth seed Miriam Bianca Bulgaru. The Romanian broke the serve of Kartal in the first set to take the lead. The second set was more of the same, with both fighting hard, however this time it was the Brit who broke serve and levelled up the match. The final set was even closer, and a tiebreak was needed. The Brit eased ahead in the breaker and didn’t look back. Kartal moved on 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(3).

In the final Kartal was against fourth seed Ekaterina Makarova. The Brit struggled in the first set as the fourth seed broke early to take the lead. It looked like the second set was going the same way, as Makarova broke and led 2-0. However, Kartal found her game and then won 12 of the last 13 games to take the title 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
