Brit of the Week
Sonay Kartal entered the ITF event in Spain and was the fourth seed. In the first round the Brit was against Tiphanie Lemaitre. The French women got off to the better start, breaking Kartal to take the lead. The second set saw the seed re-group and dominate Lemaitre to level up the match. In the final set both players stayed close. Eventually, Kartal broke serve and moved into the next round 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The second round saw Kartal against qualifier Tess Sugnaux. The Swiss found the Brit far too strong. Kartal dominated from the outset, barely putting a foot wrong. The seed eased through into the next round in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
In the quarter-final the Brit was against sixth seed Tamira Paszek. The Austrian seemed to be struggling from the off, as Kartal dominated. The Brit eased through the first set, losing only one game. The second set saw Kartal breaking at will. Paszek clearly had a problem and was unable to continue, handing the win to the fourth seed in straight sets 6-1, 3-0 (RET).
The semi-final saw Kartal against Lucky Loser Elena Micic. The Australian stayed with the Brit, before Kartal broke to take the lead. The second set was much closer. Micic fought hard and tried to get back into the match. It took a good battle, but Kartal secured the break to move into the next round 6-3, 7-5.
In the final the Brit was against second seed Linda Klimovicova. Kartal dominated from the outset. The fourth seed didn’t put a foot wrong during the entire match. The Czech was unable to get anywhere near the Brit in the match. Kartal lifted the title dropping only one game 6-1, 6-0.
