Brit of the Week
Johannus Monday entered qualifying at the South Bends ITF event in Indianna. The young Brit has followed Cameron Norrie and Paul Jubb in travelling to America to study and play tennis. Monday had to get through qualifying to hit the main draw. The Brit secured the wins needed and made the main draw of the event, dropping only one set.
In the main draw, the first round the Brit drew ATrice Pickens. The American had also reached this stage through the qualifying draw. Monday out played Pickens in the first set, breaking the American to take the lead. In the second set Monday dominated and eased through into the second round 6-3, 6-2.
The second round saw Monday against Noah Schachter. The American wildcard was no match for the Brit who dominated from start to finish. Both sets were sublime from Monday, who barely put a foot wrong. The young Brit continued from the first round and broke easily as Schachter struggled. Monday moved into the next round in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
In the quarter-final the Brit was up against American Perry Greg. Monday and Greg stayed toe to toe in the first set, proving to be the trickiest match to date for the young Brit. However, Monday managed to secure the break of serve right at the end of the set and take the lead. The second set saw the Brit dominate again and Greg was unable to stay with Monday. The young Brit moved into the semi-final in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
For the semi-final Monday was due to play Ryan Shane. The American withdrew before taking to the court, so the young Brit was through to his first ITF final, on his first foray in the main draw of an ITF event. Monday progressed through 0-0 (RET).
In the final Monday was against fifth seed Sekou Bangoura. The young Brit was not overwhelmed as he had not beaten a seed in the main draw to this point. The American could not stop Monday from breaking early in the first set to take the lead. The second set was a little closer, as Bangoura stayed close to the Brit. However, Monday secured the break of serve towards the end of the set to lift the title 6-3, 7-5.
