Brit of the Week

Jay Clarke entered the ITF event in Porec and was the second seed. The Brit drew Mili Poljicak in the first round. The Croatian stayed with Clarke in the first set and looked to be forcing a tiebreak. However, Clarke secured the vital break of serve at the end and took the lead. This seemed to break Poljicak as the Brit dominated the second set and eased into the next round 7-5, 6-1.

The second round saw Clarke against Petr Brunclik. The Czech junior found the Brit far too strong in the first set and Clarke dominated and took the lead. The second set saw Brunclik stay closer with the Brit, before Clarke eventually broke serve and moved into the next round in straight sets 6-0, 6-4.

In the quarter-final the Brit was against seventh seed Tommaso Compagnucci. Clarke dominated the Italian in the first set, barely putting a foot wrong. The second set, though, was much closer as the Italian started to find his range. Compagnucci stayed with Clarke and looked to force a tiebreak. However, the second seed secured the vital break of serve right at the end to move into the next round 6-1, 7-5.

The semi-final saw Clarke against third seed Sandro Kopp. The Austrian and Brit battled hard in the first set and forced a tiebreak. Kopp edged through the breaker to take the lead. The second set saw Clarke try to fight back. However, Kopp eventually managed to break serve and move into the final 7-6(5), 6-3.

Honourable Mention

Giles Hussey entered the ITF event in Torello, Spain and was the fifth seed. In the first round Hussey was against Alejandro Manzanera Pertusa. The Spaniard got off to the better start and broke Hussey to take the lead. The second set saw the Brit fight back and force a tiebreak. In the breaker, Hussey got into his stride and dominated to level up the match. The final set saw the seed dominate again and move into the next round 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-2.

The second round saw the seed against another unseeded Spaniard, this time Bruno Pujol Navarro. Hussey got the early break in the first set to take the lead. The second set was dominated by the Brit, as the Spaniard was unable to get back into the set. Eventually, Hussey moved into the next round in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

In the quarter-final Hussey was against Italian Federico Iannaccone. The Brit and Italian stayed toe to toe at the start of the set, before the seed managed to secure the vital break of serve to take the lead. The second set was more of the same, with Hussey again securing the vital break of serve to move into the next round in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

The semi-final saw Hussey against third seed Ergi Kirkin. The Turk managed to get an early break of serve and take the lead. The Brit, though, fought back in the second set and forced a tiebreak. Hussey dominated the tiebreak to level up the match. The final set, though, saw Kirkin dominate Hussey and move into the final 6-3, 6-7(1), 6-1.
