SHARM-EL-SHEIKH, EGYPT – Giles Hussey claimed the singles title at the event. The Brit did not drop a set all week.

Brit of the Week

Giles Hussey entered the ITF event and was the third seed. The Brit was against Egyptian Karim-Mohamed Maamoun in the first round. Hussey and the unseeded player stayed close at the start of the set. However, the Brit managed to secure the break of serve to move into the lead. The second set was more of the same, as once again Hussey broke serve and took the match 6-3, 6-3.

In the second round the seed was against Italian Leonardo Rossi. The unseeded player stayed with the Brit for long periods of the first set. Eventually, Hussey broke serve and took the lead. The second set saw the Brit dominate as Rossi struggled to stay on terms. The third seed moved into the next round in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.

The quarter-final saw the Brit against qualifier Koray Kirci. The Turkish player had defeated the seventh seed in the first round. Hussey started very well against Kirci, who was clearly struggling. The Turk had to withdraw from the match and handed the Brit the win 2-1 (RET).

In the semi-final Hussey found himself against Amr Elsayed. The Egyptian was the toughest test to date. The first set was very close and appeared to be heading to a tiebreak. However the Brit managed to break serve right at the end of the set and took the lead. The second set was also close. Eventually, Hussey secured the break of serve needed to secure the win 7-5, 6-4.

The final saw the Brit against second seed Vadym Ursu. The Ukrainian found Hussey too strong in the first set, as the Brit dominated. The second set was closer, as the Ukrainian held serve more. Eventually, the Brit managed to break serve and secure the title 6-2, 6-4.

Honourable Mention

Yuriko Lily Miyazaki entered the ITF event in Croissy-Beaubourg and was the eighth seed. In the first round the Brit was against Latvian Diana Marcinkevica. The qualifier got off to the better start and surprised the Brit, breaking at the end of the set to take the lead. However, Miyazaki re-grouped and forced a tiebreak in the second set. The breaker saw the Brit edge through and level the match. The final set saw Miyazaki break serve to secure the win and move in the next round 5-7, 7-6(6),  6-3.

The second round saw Miyazaki against Valentina Ryser. The Swiss player dominated the first set and took the lead. The Brit re-grouped in the second and fought back to break the serve of Ryser and level up the match. The final set was more of the same, with Miyazaki secure a break of serve to move into the next round 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In the quarter-final the eighth seed was against third seed Arina Rodionova. The Australian found the Brit too strong in the first set as Miyazaki dominated and took the lead. The second set was a little closer as Rodionova tried to fight back. However, the Brit broke serve early and moved into the next round 6-2, 6-3.

The semi-final saw Miyazaki against fellow Brit Amarni Banks. The seed broke early in the first set and took the lead. Banks was struggling though, and as the matched moved into the second set, the unseeded Brit was forced to withdraw from the match, handing Miyazaki a spot in the final 6-3, 1-1 (RET).

In the final the Brit was against unseeded German Mona Barthel. Miyazaki and Barthel fought well in the first set, before the seed secured the break and moved ahead. The second set was even closer, with neither player getting ahead. It looked to be heading to a tiebreak, before Miyazaki finally managed to secure the break of serve and lifted the title 6-4, 7-5.
