Brit of the Week
Alastair Gray entered the ITF event in India to start his 2025 season. The Brit was unseeded but had main draw entry. In the first round the Brit was against Indian Adil Kalyanpur. Gray started well in the first set, breaking early to take the lead. The second set saw Kalyanpur try and fight back. The Indian stayed with the Brit and was going toe-to-toe. Eventually, Gray broke serve and took the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
In the second round the Brit was against qualifier Vishnu Vardhan. The Indian went toe-to-toe with Gray in the first set. However, the Brit managed to secure the break of serve to take the lead. The second set was a little easier for the Brit. Gray broke early and took the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
The quarter-final saw the Brit against the top seed Mathys Erhard. The Frenchman struggled in the match. Gray dominated the first set, losing only one game. It was clear the top seed was in difficulty. This became even more clear as the second set went ahead. Gray was still dominating and Erhard was forced to withdraw from the match, handing the Brit the win 6-1, 2-1 (RET).
In the semi-final Gray was against the fourth seed Florent Bax. The first set was very close. Neither player gave an inch. The Brit and the Frenchman stayed toe-to-toe and it looked to be heading to a tiebreak. However, Gray managed to break serve right at the end of the set and took the lead. The second set saw the Brit dominate and ease through the match in straight sets 7-5, 6-0.
The final saw the Brit against American Samir Banerjee. In the first set, Gray broke early and held on to take the lead in the match. Banerjee was struggling in the second set. After only a couple of games the American was forced to withdraw from the match and hand the Brit the win 6-3, 1-1 (RET).
