Brit of the Week

Felix Gill entered the ITF event in Manacor Spain and was unseeded. The Brit took on wildcard Coleman Wong in the first round. The player from Hong Kong managed to stay with Gill at the start of the first set, before eventually, Gill got the break of serve to take the lead. The second set saw Wong once again stay with Gill, but ultimately, the Brit again got the break and moved into the next round 6-4, 6-4.

In the second round, the Brit was against qualifier Florian Broska. The German tried to stay with Gill in the first set, but the Brit secured an early break to take the lead. The second set saw the qualifier play better, and stay toe to toe with Gill. Eventually, the Brit got the vital break of serve and moved into the next round 6-3, 6-4.

The quarter-final saw the Brit against wildcard Miguel Damas. The Spaniard struggled in the first set and was unable to hold serve much. Gill soon had the set in the bag. The second set was a little bit closer, as Damas started to find his game. However, Gill secured the break of serve and moved into the semi-final in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

In the semi-final Gill was against the second seed Alexey Vatutin. The Brit dominated the first set as the seed struggled to get a handle on the Brit’s serve. However, Vatutin re-grouped in the second set and dominated to level up the match. The final set was very close, as both players fought for the break. Eventually, Gill secured it and booked a place in the final 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

The final pitched the Brit against Daniel Rincon. The Spaniard obviously had the crowd support and Gill battled hard to try and take the win. Rincon managed to secure a break of serve in the first set and took the lead. Gill once again tried hard in the second set to get back into the match, but the Spaniard got the vital break of serve needed and took the win 6-3, 6-3.
