Brit of the Week

Jacob Fearnley entered the ITF event in Columbus, Ohio. The Brit had to come through qualifying to make the main draw. In the first round Fearnley was against sixth seed and fellow Brit Johannus Monday. The seed dominated the first set and took the lead. The second set saw the qualifier re-group and break serve to level up the match. In the final set, neither player was giving an inch and the set went to a tiebreak. In the breaker the qualifier eased through to book a spot in the next round 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(3).

The second round the Brit was against wildcard Evan Sharygin. The American stayed with the Brit in the first set, before Fearnley secured the vital break of serve and took the lead. The second set was much easier for the qualifier as the Brit eased through to make the next round in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

In the quarter-final the Brit was against top seed Radu Mihai Papoe. The Romanian found the Brit too strong in the first set as Fearnley dominated and took the lead. The second set was much closer and looked to be heading to a tiebreak. However, the Brit broke serve right at the end of the set and moved into the next round in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.

The semi-final saw Fearnley against third seed Shunsuke Mitsui. The Brit dominated the first set, as the Japanese struggled to find his game. The qualifier eased ahead. The second set saw the seed re-group and break serve to level up the match. The final set once again saw the Brit dominate and move into the final 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

In the final the Brit was against the second seed Learner Tien. All the previous matches seemed to catch up with Fearnley, as the qualifier was clearly struggling. The American won the first games easily and then Fearnley had to withdraw from the match handing the title to Tien 2-0 (RET).

The second set was more of the same as Kaji stayed with the Brit at first. Then Dart secured the break of serve and moved into the next round 6-4, 6-3.

In the quarter-final the Brit was against Kyoka Okamura. The Japanese qualifier got the better start and broke serve to take the lead. The second set saw Dart break the serve of Okamura and levelled up the match. The final set saw the Brit dominate and not lose a single game to move into the next round 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.

The semi-final saw Dart against another qualifier, this time Chinese player Wei Sija. The qualifier got the better start and broke serve to take the lead. The second set saw the Brit dominate and levelled up the match. The final set was also dominated by Dart and the Brit moved into the final 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

The second set was more of the same, with neither player able to get ahead at the start. Eventually, the fifth seed broke serve and levelled up the match. The final set was dominated by the seed who broke at will. Yue took the match 5-7, 7-5, 6-0.
