Brit of the Week

Jacob Fearnley entered the ATP Challenger and was the eighth seed. The Brit was against Jonathan Eysseric in the first round. The Frenchman came through qualifying to make the main draw. Fearnley dominated the first set, as the Frenchman struggled to stay with him. The second set saw the qualifier re-group and break the Brit serve. Eysseric levelled up the match. The final set saw the seed once again dominated to secure a space in the next round 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

The second round saw the Brit against unseeded Frenchman Robin Bertrand. The Wildcard stayed with the seed at first, before Fearnley broke serve to take the lead. The second set was more of the same. Bertrand tried to get back into the match, but the Brit kept him at bay. The Brit broke serve and took the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

In the quarter-final Fearnley was against Italian Matteo Gigante. Although Gigante had defeated the third seed in the first round, he was no match for the eighth seed. Fearnley dominated from the outset. The Brit barely put a foot wrong and eased through both sets. The Brit moved into the next round dropping only one game 6-1, 6-0.

The semi-final saw the eighth seed against Alexander Blockx. The Belgian stayed close in the first set. Fearnley managed to break serve to take the lead. The second set saw Blockx try to fight back. However, the Brit broke early in the set and the Belgian couldn’t get back into the match. Fearnley moved into the final 6-4, 6-3.

In the final the Brit was against fifth seed Harold Mayot. The Frenchman struggled in the first set, as Fearnley broke serve early to take the lead. The second set was much much closer. Both Mayot & the Brit battled hard and forced a tiebreak. In the breaker Fearnley edged through and took his fourth Challenger title 6-3, 7-6(5).
