Brit of the Week
Kyle Edmund entered the ATP Challenger event qualifying. The Brit made the main draw. In the first round Edmund was against fourth seed Jeffrey John Wolf. The American struggled in the first set, as qualifiers tend to trouble seeds. The Brit dominated and took the lead. The second set was a little closer, as Wolf stayed with the Brit and forced a tiebreak. In the breaker, the Brit eased ahead and took the match in straight sets 6-1, 7-6(4).
The second round saw Edmund against Dominic Stricker. The Swiss player stayed with the Brit at the start of the first set, before Edmund secured the break of serve and took the lead. The second set was more of the same. Stricker just could not get ahead and the Brit soon broke to take the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
In the quarter-final Edmund was against sixth seed Abdullah Shelbayh. The Jordanian stayed close to the Brit in the first set, and looked to be forcing a tiebreak. However, Edmund secured the vital break of serve and took the lead. The second set saw Edmund dominate as Shelbayh could not get into the match. Edmund moved on in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
The semi-final saw the Brit against Naoki Nakagawa. The Japanese and Edmund battled hard in the first set and a tiebreak ensued. In the breaker it was the Japanese player who edged through and took the lead. Edmund re-grouped in the second set, dominating Nakagawa to level up the match. The final set saw the Japanese player come out fighting. Nakagawa dominated the set and booked a spot in the final 7-6(5), 0-6, 6-2.
